CPU/motherboard question

Quick question: does it make sense that a motherboard that supports a 3.2Ghz P4 should also support a 3.0Ghz P4?

The reason I ask is that I had a 3.2Ghz P4 in my laptop, but for various reasons had to replace it with a 3.0Ghz P4. Both have similar specs, Hyperthreading, 800Mhz FSB, socket 478, etc. But the 3.0Ghz doesn't seem to want to work in my motherboard.

As I got the 3.0Ghz on Ebay, I don't know if I have been sold a dud.
