dual channel memory

OK, i know this is going to make some people laugh, but i have recently purchased some memory and to be honest, it doesnt seem to have made a huge difference to my pc.

i got 2 x 1gb modules, and im trying to figure out if i have stuck them in right.

my asus a8n-e system board has 4 memory slots, blue and black.

problem is that each set od slots is blue and black.

so my question is, do i need to put the memory into the only blue ones, or the only black ones.....

the manual tells met hat channel A is DImm A_1 and DIMM A_2, which would make sense to me, becuase they make a single pair.

    the next line however says...
When Installing two DDR DIMM modules, insert in DIMM A_1 and DIMM B_1

which are the first slots on seperate channels (i think)

anyone got any light they can shed?

Use the two blue slots, thats dual channel, so are the 2 blacks but they are for a second set of dual channel

The bad news is sometimes the 2gig sets of ram have very loose timings (they are slow) and rated at 3-3-3-8 where as good performance ram in 1 gig set are usually around 2-2-2-5 or 2-3-2-6

hmm, well, i have just changed my memory aruond and now its telling em that the memory is running at 333mhz, instead of 400mhz.
i originally had 2 x 512mg inthere and it told me they were 333mhz, so it may be i went out and invested in 2gb for nothing.

i will swap them about again and maybe add in the 512s in dual channel mode as well and see what happens!

to be honest, im not *too* worried about the timings.

the system is running an o/c'd amd3700 and i have an o/c'd x800gto, so the system aint too shabby.

just really trying to tweak what i have at the moment.
i made the mistake of downloading 3dmark05 and im not getting the types of scores id like to get :)

    RTFM

seriously, it will tell you in there where to put the memory for dual channel. If there are two dimm's on the same channel, it will often default to ddr333 as well.

On my Asus A8N32-SLI it is in slots 1 and 3, 1 being closest to the processor. Your motherboard could be different, in 4 socket 939 board's i've had, only two would have the same config of memory.

Also, in boot, you may be able to turn off the full screen startup logo, which will allow you to see the memory being counted and also will say if the board is in 64 bit(single) or 128 bit(dual) mode.

There isn't a huge diff between 1 and 2 gigs of memory for the moment anyway. Also, it seems your chip is an older chip, so it's maximum frequency when all 4 dimm's are installed is ddr333 (newer chips allow ddr400).

yup only venice/san diego cores and all new cores allow 4 sticks to be used at ddr400 and the command rate drops to 2T

Just use the new kit dont use 4 dimms,

What core has your processer got is it the newer san diego or the older 3700
