Im sorry if this is a stupid question but, could I get a new MOBO and put everything I got with my Dell PC on it? Specs:

    3Ghz Processor
    1Gb RAM
    Getting a 6600GT AGP Soon
    360GB HDD

Would it be worth going through the trouble and would it even work? I havent a clue about building at all. Ill have a look on Google now.

    Cheers.

    Short answer : YES

Long answer : You will have to find out the specifications of all your components and pick a motherboard that will be compatible, If you post the specs of the components or the original Dell , We can help you pick a motherboard

P.s Did the dell motherboard die, is it under warranty, and if the dell motherbard did die are you sure that other components didnt also die??

Youll have to put it in a new case however

No, the dell motherboard is fine and dandy, I was just wondering because everyone said the AMD are so much better than;) the pentiums and was wondering if I might upgrade, would it make much difference?

    Dimension 5000

    Radion X300 into 6600GT

    Pentium 4 w/ HT

The RAM is DDR2, so you can't use that.
Use the heatsink which comes with the AMD processor.

In fact, the only things you can use from the PC are the harddrives/ DVD-drives(assuming you can get them out) and any PCI devices and fans.

So then theres no bother in me doing so? Thats grand. Thanks for all your help!

it, would be cheaper to build an amd pc ,and sell your pc ,with an amd 3ghz pc u will hardly notice a difference in speed unless u wanna burn 3 dvdrws at same time, ur pc is pretty fast already, or upgrade grahics card if u wanna increase pc power.the amd is better for games but with fast grahics card and ddr2 memory ,u,ll hardly notice the difference.my advice hold onto ur pc until 4gigahertz cpus come out.amd not compatible with ddr2 memory. its like selling your car just to go 3mph faster ,doesnt make much sense unless u get a kick out of building pcs.u,ve got a fine pc ,i see no point in switching to amd,if u had a 2ghz p4, then it wud make sense.

    You make no fvcking sense.

Agreed & his advice is about as good as his punctuation generally.

Bottom line - wait until you're ready to spend some cash upgrading and then build your PC. It'll work out cheaper than buying new as you'll either be able to sell your Dell & build a totally new one, or use the Hard drive, CD drives etc from the old PC and sell the out of date components.

An excellent example of the "sms" generation!!!

Could never get the hang of it myself....thank god!!!

What gamer is attempting to say is that AMD's are better, cheaper and cooler than their equiv Intel CPU's.

Reminds me a bit of Jeremy (aka teh_pwnerer). But with less lol-ing.

I agree amd cpus are cheaper than intel cpu,s ,its just he has loads of memory,p 4 fast cpu 3.0ghz ,i just see no point in taking apart the whole pc at present just to install an amd processor.Your memory and graphics card are just as important as your processor, its a combination of the 3 ,ITS A FAST PC ,can play any game at hi detail settings, maybe when theres 4.oghz amds, avaidable ,then it would make sense to upgrade,as far as i know a 2400cpu, is sufficient for any game avaidable on the market, get a 256meg graphics card if u want to upgrade your pc,thats my advice.

    lol :D

    I have a 256mb ATI 9250 here - it'll see off a 128mb 6800GT no problem

In all seriousness - to the original poster - if you havent ordered the 6600GT yet, dont. Hold off for a few months, if you can, and save up some more cash. Then sell your PC as is and start a fresh with an AMD 939 system (or M2 if you're feeling rich) with PCI-E graphics and a clear upgrade path. AGP is dead unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭TomCo

Yeah, all the good AGP's are going out of stock so you'd be hard pushed to get one soon anyway.

Firstly can u please use the spell checker man!! Your posts are almost unintellegable.
and 2ndly nope sorry but that info is wrong.
A 3ghz AMD Opterown will destroy any intel processor out there and will DOUBLE the performance of a system in comparison to a 2.4Intel.
And unless your running extremely high resolutions going for a 256card over a 128has no effect the most effective upgrade is in GPU not RAM.

Am i incorrect in this, i thought that a 3ghz pentium 4, with 1gig ddr2 ram, with a 128meg ram grafics card would play any pc game, doom 3,half life 2 or quake 4 at high detail settings at 40frames per second, anyway,i didnt think there was such a difference between the 2 processors. My advice sell ur pc as is ,and build and amd pc with pci-x motherboard, and fast graphics card, or else hold on 1 more year, get a fast agp 128meg graphics card agp,on boards.ie,there always agp cards for sale,on boards.ie ,check benchmarks be4 you buy if ur not an expert on agp cards.i,ve only used amd atlons, so i dont really know how fast is a pentium,4 ,i,ve never used 1 for games or anything else. In other threads on computers ,i notice it was said p4 cpus can do anything if u have a fast graphics card,1gig ram installed.I,m a bad typist ,certainly not from the sms txt, generation, but if i have advice i like to post anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭masteroftherealm

Teehee no i was just lettin ya know!
Em nope see you could have a 4.2Ghz P4 2GB of RAM and a 256mb ATI 9250 and the game wont even start(I tried this for the laugh)

  • Subscribers Posts: 6,408 ✭✭✭conzy

get a 256meg graphics card if u want to upgrade your pc,thats my advice
A radeon 9250 has 4 pixel pipelines and is clocked at 275mhz and has 256mb of standard DDR ram clocked at 200mhz and a 64 bit memory bus,

A 6600gt has 8 pixel pipelines and is clocked at 500mhz and has 128mb of GDDR3 ram clocked at 500mhz with a 128bit memory bus

The 6600gt will wipe the floor with the radeon because it is faster an uses newer technology

    size doesnt matter;)

Its like putting a gig of ram in a Athlon system, and 256mb in a athlon 64 system again the athlon 64 wins because its the FASTER of the too regardless of ram

    I hope that helped;)

j2dac, I would recommend buying the 6600GT. They're excellent value right now and you'd see a big difference. Don't worry about the rest of the system.

Exchanging intel CPU/Mobo/RAM for AMD CPU/Mobo/RAM of similar performance just because you want AMD is silly. Intel are fine. The only place AMD beats them is on price/performance. Since the intel is already paid for, the price part doesn't matter.

Exactly as i said, get the agp card as recommended above and u will have a superb gaming pc,id be happy with a 2400pentium 4 pc if i cud get 1 at the moment, maybe in 2 years you might have a 4ghz amd pc.

Hey gamer, I like masteroftherealm find it extremely difficult to read your posts and mostly skip over them as you have a great love for , and care little about full stops and staring new sentences.

If you proof read what you write then it will do wonders to help others understand what your talking about.

See what happens when you stop throwing commas in left, right & center? It's readable!

Now all you need to remember is:
    • It's "comma->space" not "space->comma"
    • Same for "full stop"
    That will be all.
Make with the English! Go Go Go!!
