Whats wrong with my bike?

I just have a normal mountain bike. I have had it a few years. Lately especially in cold weather I can put my foot on the pedal, the chain turns(its not slipping on the cogs) but theres no connection to the back wheel, so the chain will fly around without any resistance then after a few seconds it works and i can cycle it but then maybe i stop at lights and go to put my foot down and its gone again for a second. Anyone seen this before, I guessing the axle is gone or something?

Sounds like your free hub is dead. Only some hubs are rebuildable, but sometimes is not worth the expense. I'd guess you will be replacing the hub very very soon.

Depends on the model but shouldn't be too dear. Standard Shimano freehub mechanism is ~€22 at Chainreaction http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=1161 . Or just call in to your local bikeshop and ask. If your hub is that worn you are probably looking at some new sprockets and chain also.
