I have a hard drive that has info on it that i need, but it wont boot up.

I have tried to slave it off of a working hard drive but nothing happens.
I have tried using the CD rom connection to boot it up again nothing happened,

Does anyone know any way i can get the info from the drive.

The reason is stopped working is i think it got a virus. not sure.

[edit] just to add it's a Maxtor hard drive. pins are like this

You know what...I think there's a pretty fatal virus doing the rounds....this is the 5th case of this I've seen in a few weeks (one of which was my own, with disasterous consequences)

If its an sata hdd then the data cable and power cable need to be pluged in for it to spin up, if its just pata then just the power cable will do it.

If its not spinning up at all its dead, all you can do then is, if its still under warrenty return it.

If its not under warrenty then give these a try:
    1. give it a hard knock as it could be stuck if it hasnt been used in a while.
    2. put it in the freezer (dont forget to put it in an antistatic bag first) for about 30 minutes and then try it again.
    3. if you have another drive of the same make and model try changing the circuit board at the back of the drive - be ccarefull as you dont want to damage another drive.
    4. their are other tricks and if you do a little googling you will find them.

do you know if there is any way to jump start it back to life?

    2. put it in the freezer (dont forget to put it in an antistatic bag first) for about 30 minutes and then try it again.
Make sure you have checked all the connections at least three times before doing anything else and the jumper settings.
Also plug out all other devices!

I have been told by friends that this works, but if its not spinning up their is normally not much you can do. But try the things I mentioned in the previous post and try google for more tricks on how to start a dead harddrive.

use the following to create a windows boot cd, this will allow you to boot up and view/remove your data if the hdd is spinning up.
