I wasn't sure exactly where to put this, so mods, please move as necessary.

I was told awhile back that Ireland has one of the best surfing pipelines in the world. I was kinda shocked, since it's so cold in Ireland (and who wants to surf in the cold? ), but I know people surf in Alaska... and it's cold there too. Just wondering if anyone else had heard about this too...

Not a surfer myself but yes, very popular, on the exposed west (atlantic) coast. Great waves, and tolerably warm water from the gulf stream, along with a wet suit make it bearable. Mainly summer mind!

bundoran has a well known great wave and there are some other great spots too, sligo, mayo, clare, kerry, cork and waterford as well as some of the spots up north. however the summer is no good, you have to tough it out in the winter to get the big waves...

yeah, the waves are best out here in the winter time too; i don't surf myself (wouldn't mind taking it up, however), but i know of a few surfers and they are NEVER HOME during the winter time; always out making the most of the nice surf conditions.. hehe.

    thanks for the replies :D

Nice waves are all well and good, but it's the getting changed in galeforce wind and rain thats off-putting for us beginners. that and the fact, that the water is bloody freezing, even with rash vest, winter suit, etc. and having to find the waves in the first place.
Lately, it's beena case of loading up with mountainboarding gear as well as surf gear, then who cares if there are no waves, there are always hills in kerry.:D

yeah, i would imagine that it would be rather cold, out in the water in ireland. i don't know how people can stand to get in the water when it's that cold! i guess it's just all about how much you love it...

I really wanna start surfin but yes, the gettin changed in gale force winds is bad. and the waves arent great around wicklow. Went once in Mayo and it was great fun. Metallica come surfin in Ireland sometimes.

You guys just gotta get more hardcore!!! Tell yourself its warm, and its warm....... ish....

I sail, windsurf, kayak, powerboat, surf and random other things all year round. Especially during the winter. Invest in some good clothing and it will make the world of difference to your enjoyment.

Easky in sligo, Bundoran in Donegal, Lahinch in Clare, Keel in Achill and various other spots along the west are the best to be had here. Tramore in Waterford can be alright sometimes. Apparantly there's a break off Killiney in Dublin, so I've heard, but I've never been.

    Happy surfing!!

Pissing contests will not be tolerated: Can't we all just get along?

It's more like taking the piss rather than pissing contest.
