Regular poster, but dont want to say this aloud

I have been working in an administrative roll for the last 15 months in a small company. Since I started our portfolio has trebled, I am given a personal sales target of taking on one new client a month, I get between 2 and 3. In regards our finance department I was given a target of 2 million for the year, I brought in 10.7 million with another 8 million to close in the next 5 months. By comparison, another branch, which has 4 staff did 3.5 million collectivley.

My administration is poor, well allways has been but I have worked hard at it and it is now at 90% of what would be considered perfect. I was promised a promotion begining today, the day before christmas I was told that this promotion will not happen for another 6 months, which means with training I probably wont get into my roll till next Christmas, considering I was supposed to be in this roll by April, earning allot more, I am pissed off.

I really like my employer and the staff I work with and the staff thoughout the company. But I just found out a competitor is opening beside us and is looking for staff. I could go directly into the roll I want, but work agains who I work for now. I am torn as what to do, advice would be greatly appreciated.

while the competitor may offer more chances for you, it may be a horrible work enviroment, so don't get too hasty.
I say go to managment about it. Ask why the promotion has been delayed and put the facts you just gave us to them. Make it clear that you are a good worker that they could do without losing, but be careful not to threaten them. Don't say you plan on leaving or anything like that, they probably realise their rival is opening up and looking for staff, you don't need to point that out to them, just point out your dissatisfaction with the current situation.
Maybe use vauge phrases like "I am considering what I can do next", hint hint

Why would you not go to them?
Company loyalty? I hope not :)
Could you go for an interview and show your current company the offer that you get and tell them to match it or you're off?

I can go for the interview, I dont feel like I can approach managment about it again. If I do it will seem like a direct threat which I dont think they will respond well to. A guy was taken in September who was promised the position last January, and is now in the position I was to get. My record are better than his and I think if I was to go to the competitor I would be up against him, we could have the same "target audience".

Why have respect for them when they obviously have very little for you?

If I were you I'd go for the interview, show them how good you are at your current job and hope they offer you a position.

A mate of mine went from one competitor to the other a few months ago and is happier than ever.

Hang on, there may be a legitimate reason why the promotion is not yet available. Ask them to give you a raise based on your present sales/client base etc to show their commitment until the promotion comes through. If they say no, then jump ship to the competitor. If I was working for a company and was directly responsible for over €10m in sales, I would expect the management to at least agree a generous salary increase until promotion opportunity arises.

Agree with flogen & buttermilkjack, assuming you're happy with your current company, I wouldn't stir things up too much but have a frank conversation.

Brinkmanship isn't really the way to go, either leave or stay. If you do threaten to leave unless, they either will let you go or make you an offer. Either way the relationship will be worsened. Again assuming you like your current employers.

    Good luck.
