Canon 350D or Nikon D70?

    Folks,
I'm looking to buy a new camera sometime in the coming months, at the moment I'm torn between the Canon 350D and the Nikon 70D. I'm would like the higher resolution of the 350D (8mp vs 6mp), but is that really important?
There aren't really any features or either camera that I have to go for. I know the Nikon has a better build quality, which I think would matter to me too.

Has anybody owned both of these cameras and is able to comment on them both?
If not, what would everybody else go for?

Also, lens value, availability and purchase would be an important factor too.

    Comparision

    Cheers,
    S.

I'm not into Nikon v Canon crap. They are both great cameras. In this case I would go for the 350 simply because the noise at high ISO's in way superior to the Nikon (and my own 10d). The megapixel size is irrelevant unless you are printing very large sizes. Lens wise I'd imagine the prices are fairly similar and 3rd party stuff, like Sigma, are priced the same for either model.

You wont go wrong with either, I have seen amazing images from both. The 350 just shades it for me though.

theres so little difference in these two cameras, 80% of the difference you'll get will be due to the photographer using the camera and the other 20% will be because of the lens you use

i'd buy canon because i have canon lenses

there's a million posts on these two cameras on every camera forum on the web, go read them or maybe just go practice taking photos, the first option will waste your time, the second option will make you a better photographer

Given the choice i would buy the d70.

    Why?

...because i prefer its grip. It 'feels better' in my hands.

They are both excellent cameras, will give excellent results, and are more or less the equal of each other. So thats what it boils down to for me...

Actually, closer to the time, I think I'll head into a decent camera shop and ask to try them both out, if that is possible. Thing is - I'll have no intention of buying them from that shop at all :o
Do you reckon they'd let me?

conns have display models you can play with.

the nikon will feel better in your hand but both are great cameras. one other reason to go with canon is because the leses (especially at the top end) are slightly cheaper than the nikon equivalents

as i've said before, what really matters is the person holding the camera

You better buy the Canon so because none of the (reputable/well known) online sellers have the D70s in stock.

I've been looking since end of August

I went through the same decision process not long ago and opted for the Canon. As others have said the Canon lens line is slightly better and a little cheaper. Also I felt the colours produced by the Canon were just a little better than the Nikon.

One thing though - try the Canon with the grip. It totally transforms the feel of the camera and also gives you the additional battery life and full control of the camera in portrait mode. Should be a mandatory accessory!

I think a better comparison with the Canon 350D would be the Nikon D50 and not the D70. Anyhow, as others have said, they are very good cameras and
in the end it's down to personal cosmetic preferences and how each camera feels in your hand. Go to your local camera shop and try them out then make up your mind and buy online! As regards the megapixel difference it's not very important. See what Ken Rockwell has to say about the megapixel myth at:

    elderlemon,
I think I'm going to go for the Canon then. Could you tell me more about the grip please? How much more battery power can you fit in, and more importantly, how much is it?

    Cheers,
    S.

The battery grip holds two batteries. You will of course need to buy an extra battery to go with the grip as it comes without one. It can also take 6 AA batteries but running time with AAs is suppposed to be poor. I Paid €200 for mine in Berminghams on the quays.

The grip really does make a world of difference to the camera. I would highly recommend you get one.

you should do this, go to a shop and at least hold both cameras, consider the menus, controles, weight, size. Everything. I don't understand how anyone could spend €800 ish euro on camera without holding one first.

    good luck either way

You in Dublin? Go into Jessops and ask them to show you the 350 plus the grip. For me it transformed the holding of the camera plus you get the additional camera controls on the grip for portrait shots.

I got my grip on ebay for €100 (new).

And don't buy Canon batteries. I have 4 for my Canon 10d. Three bought on EBay for less than a tenner each. The cheap ones last as long as the Canon ones.

Thanks for the replys. I'm going to get the camera first, then maybe get the grip after a while, mainly just to spead the cost. The grip is something that I would feel more confident in having, than not. How long would one battery last on a 350D? Either number of frames, or just a general estimate, based on "average" use, if there is such a thing.

A single battery should last ages (100s of shots) and not having a grip does not preclude you from carrying 1 or more spare charged batteries in your pocket/bag. Using the grip is more for handling the camera, particularly in the vertical orientation. You should definitely hold one in a shop and see what you think.
