    Hey, all.

As some of you proably know, I'm going to be studying at DCU during the second semester. I'm from the US.

My departure date is at the end of the month so I'm making lists of things I should remember to bring, and I need some help.

What sort of things would you suggest a foriegner who will be staying in Dublin for 5 months bring with him? I have been to Dublin once before, though my stay was short.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

A map, just of the town centre.

dublinbus.ie, print out time tables. 13, 13a, 11, and 19a all go to DCU from Dublin City Centre, leaving from O Connell street.

    Money, its expensive here.

    An open mind.

    And more money :)

Good point, voltage here is 220V not the 110V/120V like in the U.S.

    Isn't it fine everywhere?

If its the guy I know who's moving its College Park. It's grand there. Can't download, but the speeds are fine. It's only 80quid for a semester. You can get the form here https://www.dcu.ie/csd/pdfs/connectivity.pdf - you might need to log in to get that, and you cant log in until you register... But otherwise jsut do it when you move over. They turn it on within 24 hours.

Unless something has changed without my knowing, I will be living in College Park.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering how that all worked. I'm "registered" but I don't have username to log in to do anything. I suspect I'll be getting that informationn in the the next week, or when I arrive.

When you arrive. :) You can pay online now as well. In the first week they register you in the library and you get your DCU student card and apic on it, and membership to the bar if you want it!

Excellent. Thanks for the info. I feel a bit less lost than I did a few weeks ago, thanks to you lot.

Theres also a chance in second semester to join any club or societyu you want as they have a clubs and socs day in semester two where most clubs and socs have a stand and you only pay 2euro for membership :)

If a club or society you want to join isnt there you can contact the chair of the society and give him/her the money and he/she will sign you up :)

Cool. Yeah I want to join a few societies/clubs. Once I get registered upon arrival, I'll be able to do a bit more, I think.

One of my goals is just to make a lot of friends. With luck, people will be welcoming.

Hahaha. I'll have some shoes and I have my jump drive. As for "sexy american friends", there are 7 that I know about who are studying at DCU in semester 2. Haha.

    Sleaze.

Using poor Ben for his wimmin.

Nah, Ben, join Redbrick if you want to meet some of the people from here, and a lot of the other societies would have regular meet ups! You're gonna be swamped with things to do! From people in your course/course work/socailsing etc!

It'll be great, so it will.

The problem with that is if join redbrick you will only meet people from here ON HERE. For you see redbrick is a neardy computer soc where ppl chat and bitch online and never go out except for the 1 or 2 redbrick events.

    join snowboarding!!!!

ps i'm aware of the irony of complaining, about ppl being online, online.

Complete and utter bull**** as usual. Sure Redbrick has its share of quiet people but hell if the rest of us don't like to go out, ain't that right Jes! :D

Also we have ALOT more than one or two events during the year...

I didn't mean just from Redbrick. And I find what you said quite sterotypical and offensive. Bloody snow boarders, load of loud jocks with red and blue jumpers :P.

How's that for irony, and I'll explain it just like you did, saying you offended me, and then offending you just the same way...

I amn't gonna defend Redbrick itself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 119 ✭✭frodo_dcu

he he ur all so easy on here

but seriously rugbug is right join snowboarding and rugby and you'll make loads friends in blue and red hoodies

and are blue is nicer than yours louise

sorry to stereo type redbrick but if i had may way u would be bluebrick <- prizes for anyone who get's the referance of that

op (ben i think) your best way to pick which clubs and soc's to join is come and meet the ppl on clubs and soc's day mk II then you'll see for yourself

hope u have a great over here - learn to drink guinness and why jamson is much better than any burbon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

Man theres no way I'm going to get dragged into a debate about what socities are seen as cool or not. Hows about we let Ben here just go to Clubs And Socs Day with an open mind and join those socities that he finds the most interesting. Main point is your going to make loads of friends no matter what Society you join so its just up to you to decide what kind of fun you want to have along the way! :D

Indeedy but I was referring to the fact that some socities were being portrayed in a negative light, hence I'm merely suggesting we let him go with as open a mind as possible...

Ah sure aren't we all deadly altogether.

    Be gob and be gorrah.

    Oh yesh.

Good idea on the Chipper thing. Nothing like a bit of Macaris when you're pissed drunk and stumbling back to res with a load of mates...
