So what way will DAB licences work? Will there be more available, will they still have to go by ComReg first, will existing stations be automatically entitled to a licence?
Also, why would niché stations spring up as a result, surely DAB stations are just as expensive to run as traditional AM/FM stations?

I think RTE might start up a few niche stations to complement their existing ones in the same way the BBC has....we'll just have to wait and see

If we follow the British model then, yes there will be loads more stations because loads of stations can use the same bandwidth on DAB as one station on FM.

Also, in Britain all existing national and local services were guaranteed spots on the various local area multiplexes, as DAB doesn't cover the whole country and is mainly LOS like FM.

Soz to butt in, we are discussing in extensively on the ICDG Terrestrial board atm...

But just to answer some of the questions here.....

Its a trial, so only the existing RTÉ stations (plus maybe Today FM and WRN) are being broadcast. I must say these are very much experimental broadcasts and RTÉ have said not to buy a DAB Digital Raidio yet.

As for channels, who knows. I'd like to see the existing opt-out broadcasts from Radio 1 MW/LW also broadcast. Comreg will have judge for a licence if RTÉ want to carry on, plus there is another frequency that can be used for a commercial outfit. The article above is very much thinks that local radio stations will be heard countrywide, I very much doubt that will be the case. The ILR's will want to be the only operators on their turf.

There are a some techies against the technology, thats all discussed over in that area of boards.ie in depth.
