Hi, I've a wee problem which I hope you can help me out with. Here it is.....

    My old spec was

    AMD Athlon64 4000+
Epox 9HDAI Pro with Via K8T800 Chipset
    Gainward 6800le 128mb
    2x512 Corsair TWINX RAM
    Thermaltake Silent Purepower 460W PSU.
    Windows XP Home SP2

Now, where I live, I can't get broadband so with this build I used a 56kbps PCI modem from some nameless company. It worked fine.

I did a bit of an overhaul on me rig a few days ago. I used the same disk to install Windows XP Home SP2 and stuck in the same nameless PCI modem. I set up my internet connection to Eircom, went to connect and........no dial tone.

I checked and changed the cable.......no dial tone
I tried a different phone socket......no dial tone
I disabled the onboard LAN and Ethernet thingies in BIOS just in case there was a conflict but still no dial tone
I went into device manager and unticked the Wait for Dial tone before dialing option but still nothing so I reticked it.
I tried all three PCI slots on my mobo and.......guess......still no dial tone
I checked that the drivers were installed correctly......they were.
I queried the modem in Device Manager and it came back successful so the computer can communicate with it

I dug up an old Gateway 500 Intel Pentium lll out of the attic. I got it running Windows XP Home and I stuck the same PCI modem into it and guess what???? It works and I'm posting this from it.

But I don't want to have to keep using this old Gateway just to surf the net, so I thought I'd pick some brains on this ole forum.#

I'm getting a new modem tomorrow but I don't think it'll solve the problem. I hope I'm wrong.

i wud assume its drivers as the cable is ok, the socket is ok and the modem is ok
mobo is new and u said the computer can communicate wit the modem so doubt its that
did u try removing every trace of the modem drivers and retrying again?
some modems give u different options in the dial program and say something like "connect using ..." in the dial properties. try different options here? r better again the same options that u picked (defualt i assume) for the old gateway.

plug it in,etc. and open up Hypertrm
    Type:
    AT - result=?
    ATZ - result=?
    ATDTanothernumberperhapsamobiletelephone - result=?

Reinstall the modem's driver and test?
