Internet connection

I often find it difficult to connect to the internet in the first place, download emails and webpages. With Outlook Express, if I click "send/receive" again it sometimes works or may have to reconnect to the internet. With Internet Explorer, "this page cannot be found/displayed" often comes up. I have contacted technical support and they talked me through a modem test ie ringing a mobile number with the modem and it worked correctly.

What else could it be? I had this problem before I moved house and put it down to the fact that I was working off a DIY extension and/or the ISP but now I have a different ISP and a CAT5E cable from the main Eircom socket coming into the house.

first thing i would try is a ping test to see if u have a connection click start>Run type cmd, black screen comes up type

    ping www.eircom.net

if you get reply from...... u have a live connection.

what it dont get is u say you have CAT5E cable from the main Eircom socket coming into the house. CAT5E is network cable and wont fit in Main Socket, is it Broadband or Dial up? if Dialup i prosume u mean telephone lead into modem.

Tried the ping and got a reply as it is now up and running. It is more getting connected in the first place.

There was a break in the phone line loop within the house so the electrician had to put a connection from the main wall socket to the wall socket which wasn't working. I had problems connecting to the internet so he changed the cable to CAT5E but didn't make much difference. It is dial-up I am using.

The cable configuration i have is: RJ11 Wall socket into surge protection socket BT input socket. Double adaptor from RJ11 output socket (one cable for modem and one for phone). Would the surge protector or double adaptor have a bearing?

PS It has just disconnected for no apparent reason and took about ten attempts to re-connect.
