Major frickin problem

I've got a big problem here. Every time I open windows explorer or any folders on the computer it crashes. Dr. Watson (a useless wee c*nt who I figured was dead since windows 98) and also crashes. This happens every time.

It only started when I put in my USB key into the computer i think, and that's the only common connection that I can find between the two computers in the house that this is happening on. Is it possible that my USB key is infected with something? Are there autorun functions on USB keys the same way there are on CD's and floppy's?

Update: this problem only seems to affect explorer.exe. If I open word or excel and access the folders from there it works fine. I'm running XP home and the size of my explorer.exe is 1,008kb. Seems a bit excessive don't it? Also when I go to close the window that crashed there is a second process open with that default command prompt icon on it. Presumably there is some virus hijacking explorer.exe?

You could set using "cmd" in run to format the USB key to ensure nothing is on it.

    Detailed info here

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/convertfat.mspx

convert D: /fs:ntfs is the command to use where "D" is the drive the pen drive comes up as.

Sorry, not an option, too much important stuff on it plus if it is a virus i'm always curious to know what makes it tick :D. I'll boot to dos and backup the stuff. A bit of an unusual request but does anyone have the original explorer.exe for XP home. Or is there a way to extract it from the dell recovery cd?

Never mind, fixed with a simple system restore. If anyone is interested in

I'm pretty sure I got it from a WMF file from the new exploit around that I was messing with. I also have that WMF file still if anybody is interested.

Eh one problem though, explorer.exe is still 980kb. Is this normal? Last time I remember explorer.exe was about 150kb, but maybe i'm just too oldskool.

    0.98MB reported here.
    So you're just oldskool.

Turns out it was actually 1,018kb before system restore. Thanks for the help.
