End of the line beckons for 5,000 Luas fare dodgers

AT least 5,000 fare dodgers were caught on the Luas system in its first full year of operation.

And the freeloaders have been slapped with a full 'standard fare' of €45 each by Connex, the company which operates Dublin's tram system.

There have already been several district court convictions for fare dodging with the maxmium €600 fine imposed in several cases.

"We now have a regular slot along with Dublin Bus in the District Court to deal with those people who avoid paying their fares," a spokeswoman for Connex said.

In spite of the 5,000 dodgers, the company insists there is a very low level of fare evasion on both the Red and Green Lines.

"We have 36 customer service officers who regularly travel the routes but there is a high rate of fare compliance for such an open system," the spokeswoman added.

More than 85,000 people a day used the Luas system in December and usage has exceeded all expectations, according to Padraic White, chairman of the Rail Procurement Agency (RPA).

"The Luas service has achieved financial breakeven well ahead of schedule and the RPA has recently entered into contracts to increase the capacity on the Red Line through extensions for the 26 trams serving that line," she said.

In the first full year of operation by both lines, Luas carried 22m passengers, 2m more than anticipated. There has been a surge in the use on the Red Line from Tallaght to Connolly station. It now carries 43,000 passengers a day. However, all Luas users face a 3.8pc fare hike in the New Year.
