Hi, I've a Toshiba laptop with a DVD-R rewriter. I've a lot of movie files that i want to burn on to a DVD-R, which i then want to watch on a normal DVD player. As far as i know i need to decode(if that's the correct terminology??) these .avi and .mpg format movies to .vob format before i can burn them through Nero or similar programme. Is there any software with i can download to do this. Sorry if this is a bit confusing.

if you have the latest version of Nero 7 premium(or any of the later nero packages) you can used Nero Vision to covert to vob files...very easy to use once you get the hang of it and on average takes about 2 hours to convert..only thing is unless your pc is dual core you won't be able to use it during this process

use a program (I use divxtodvd but use the full prog or you'll get a link across your picture) to convert to MPEG2 then use dvdshrink to author it and burn it using dvddecrypter or nero.

Cheers for that. I've used DivXtoDVD before actually. It's just when everything's done and you watch the DVD on your tv it looks a bit squashed on the screen. Is there anything that can be done for this? Sometimes the credits at the start of the film are outside the screen. Does this make any sense?

Make sure you set your tv format in the settings in DivXtoDVD (Settings -> TV Format, change to PAL and 16:9/4:3) as in 16:9 for widescreen tvs or 4:3 for normal tvs. It will encode it according to this.
