I saw an ad in the yesterday's paper for Currys/Dixons (can't remember which) they are selling the E-500 with the kit lens for 649 euros. Seems like good value. Looking at amazon.co.uk they are selling this item for 499 stg not including Irish VAT or delivery. The Nikon D50 and Canon 350D are 449 and 555 stg respectively.

Anyone have any comments on the Olympus. Looking at reviews it seems good but noise at high ISOs is worse than for the Canon.

Be careful comparing prices with Currys kit the lens included is a 17-45 not the 14-45 in the kit for sale in all other places. In an ad in this months photography monthly magazine Olympus UK quote a RRP of 600 for the standard kit, 650 for the double lens kit and 499 for the SE (Currys), all in sterling.
I bought a double lens kit from camireland before christmas, waiting for UPS to get around to delivering it, it cost me €730 delivered with the VAT off.

Hmm, I've discarded the Curries ad so can't check what lens was included. But you're probably right about the different lenses as the Curries deal did seem quite good value. Thanks for the heads up.

when buying an SLR, you should think more about the lenses than the body as that's the part that changes the image far more than a change in body makes

just my advice from about 16 years of using SLR cameras

I bought my Olympus E500 at Dixons on the 28th of december,
It came with a Zuiko Digital 17.5-45mm lens, strap, cables & CDROM,
The only disappointment was the battery, instead of the standard BLM-1 rechargable camcorder type battery the camera is powered by three Lithium CR123a cells in a plastic holder, I dont know how long these will last, Lidl are selling them for €3.99,
But at €649 its still a good deal for a DSLR, I was saving up to buy a Nikon

I'd just like to point out (although I'm sure you already know) that the Olympus E-500 has a start-up time of almost 3 seconds, which is an incredibly long time for a dSLR - the others are all instant (~0.2secs)... you don't want to miss a great shot because you are waiting for the camera to start-up...
I have a Nikon D50 and I am extrememly happy with it.
