I'm hoping to go to Cuba in 2006 for a few months.Has anyone ever been, any suggestions?

How much would it cost to survive about 6 months give or take?

I'd say work is impossible to come by has anyone here worked there?

A cousin went there for 6 weeks and had a great time but work would be nearly impossible

I have had mixed reports about Cuba. Many people think it is wonderful. But I have one very good friend who could not enjoy his time there because of the misery that the Cubans live in. You should think about this before you go. I have not been there myself, so I cannot say firsthand how it is. Maybe you will love it. I'm pretty sure you won't make any significant money there though, if you do find a job.

Its a communist country, you cant just go in and ask for a job in the local cafe. Everything is state owned and the government pays wages. Considering you dont live there I would say there are zero oppertunities to work.

Accomodation can be had for as cheap as $12 per night for a room in a house and up to $40 per night (in someone's house, not in a hotel) but you can negotiate prices. Food is very cheap, you could get a decent feed for $5, but quality varies greatly. In a regular restaurant you would pay around $10 for a bog standard pizza. By the way, the tourists pay a different price to the locals in everything. Drink is cheap. You can get a rum and coke for around $3 or you can buy a bottle of rum for $5 and add the coke yourself. Again prices vary.

    Some tips:
Beware of husslers. They are everywhere. If you buy cheap cigars they could be fakes (but its worth the risk unless you are a real cigar connisseur:D )

I highly recomment taking a horse back ride through the sugar cane fields. They are organised from Havana, you will see cowboys (literally) touting for business on the main streets - it was one of the most exhillarating things I have ever done. Thought it was a nit dodgy at first, but it wasnt.

When you are going back to the airport, if you get an unlicenced taxi (ie some random bloke with a car) to take you to the airport, they will only drop you to the access road that leads to the airport and you will have to haul your luggage the rest of the way......only the government taxis (hence much more expensive) are officially allowed to pick up passangers.

If you think of it, bring some pens and soap with you, there are loads of locals begging but they generally want pens and soap not necessarily money (althought no one turns down money, right).....point is, they just want stuff thats expensive over there and they have their pride.
