In a NL Holdem game,head's up..... I had K8, Opposing player had KQ and there was a pair of fives down on the board We both were claiming Pair 5's King Kicker so we split pot - Is this correct

No, KQ wins, since after the K the next highest card is the Q kicker.

If the board was 55A72 the your best 5 card hand would be 55AK8, opponents best hand would be 55AKQ, with the Q beating your 8.
