PC World offers usually end up in the hands of their staff and friends and family of such. Any of the PC World offers I've seen posted here never seem to be obtainable.

I was in pcworld in waterford yesterday morning and a guy came in looking for one of these, he was told that they were all gone at that price but when he questioned as to how they could be all gone at 10.05am when they only opened, the supervisor suddenly appeared with 7 of them and I can confirm that he paid €160 for it. They were not advertising the pricedrop in store though.

I myself also had an bit of a discussion in there over there ad in the Sunday world over the weekend. They were advertising 512mb flash drives for half price down to 29.99 from 59.99 also for 2 days only. I picked up 3 of them and went to pay for them. They tried to charge me the full price for them. I explained to the girl about the ad in the paper and she proceeded to show me there in store brochere which had all the items in it that were reduced, but the memory stick has an * beside it indicitating that this offer was only available when purchased with a laptop or pc. There was no mention of this in the paper.

So off to the shop I went to purchase yesterday's Sun which also had the same ad. Back to the shop I went and threw down the ad from the paper and asked the assistant where the * was in the paper. There was none. I eventually got them for the 29.99.

I was buying a wireless network card in Blanchardstown PC world recently. There was a sign up- 1/2 price sale 80 reduced to 40 (I think). Brought it to the counter and they wanted 80. Girl at the counter went to one of the guys on the floor and asked him. He took down the sign and they still wanted 80 for it. I told them they are obliged to sell it at the advertised price and they had to give in.

but they aren't obliged to sell it at that price, no harm in trying though :p

Well, they were no where to be seen in Liffey Valley PC world.

I found the same Toshiba one in Dixions but when I asked they said it was €320, so meh.:v:

Are you sure? I think I remember in my business studies all those years ago something about having to sell a product at the displayed price.

'Fraid not. There's no obligation on the retailer to sell at any price. The advertised price (even if on a sign in the shop) is an 'invitation to treat', rather than a sales contract, so they don't have to adhere to the price, be it a mistake, or otherwise.

yeh, it reminds me of the "deal" dell were doing online, they mistakely offered servers worth like over 1000 euros for about 200 euros. there was a huge thread here about it if i remember correctly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭kc66

You sound like you know what you are talking about

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

So what would be false advertising and is there any legal implementations on it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,891 ✭✭✭Jammer

It scans as 320, but the teller must discount it down to the price advertised in the paper. There are some left in Blanchardstown , Carrickmines and Galway.

Just refer to the ad if they ask for €320...

It makes sense though. cos you could come up, take a €5.99 sticker off a thing of software, and put it on a €80 wireless card.

There are so many variations of wireless cards that prices can get mixed up. Netgear, for example, have a good few 54G cards, seperated only by model codes and the such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,309 ✭✭✭✭alastair

The link above explains the legal position.

Even if the drive is advertised at a lower price, the shop doesn't have to sell it to you at that price. They can choose to, but there's no legal obligation. All they are required to do is point out that the pricing is in error, and let you decide if you still want to buy.

If they are knowingly advertising at a false price, then you can fall back on the Consumer Information Act to get their wrist slapped, but they still won't have to sell to you at the advertised price if they choose not to.

It all depends how they advertise it. If its an instoor ad then afaik its all bets off they can ask for whatever price they want to at the till.

If you see an ad in the paper saying its for such a price and you go in they have to sell it for that price cause otherwise its false advertising but the only thing with that is they usually advertise it as an "offer" ie special offer 14.99 etc which is not saying they will sell it at that price but are offering to. Generally if the manager is anyway human they will sell it for the price of the offer no matter what but some wont and are fully entitled to stick to the law.

I got a 250GB one before Christmas in PC World Blanch for 129.99, but the price wasn't advertised. The guy in the shop told me they reduced them that morning and they hadn't had time to put the special offer signs up. It wasn't Toshiba though, it was Freecom.

Exactly, nothing special about it at all.

Keep an eye on the temps of that drive. Any of my external drives in fanless enclosures get very hot if left on for any length of time. I've had one or two case of data corruption which I suspect were caused by it. The enclosures I have with fans run a lot cooler, (obviously).

€169.99 for a 320GB external drive (and a good looking one too) is pretty special imo.
