    Have you not heard of 6B 7B 8B or even 9B?

    To get it dark I just use dark pencils, surprising enough. Never smudge, there's not one part of that drawing which I have smudged, Smudging it the method of a beginner that's getting nowhere quick. If you learn one thing, dont smudge. It looks terrible and flat it doesn't make the picture feel alive. Don't Smudge.

    i used to be a terrible smudger when i first started using charcoal the temptation to smudge was always great, but my pictures looked so dramatic and life-like when finished when i hadn't smudged them :).

    the softer pencils often smudge, sometimes indirectly so you have to be careful when using them.

    I find to avoid accidental smudging start at the top of the picture and work down, especially for portraits.
