it can be extremely easy, especially with programs like PowerQuest Partition Magic (now Norton Partition Magic). But there is a risk of making your disk unreadable.

The most obvious free way to do it is using the Windows install disk; but thats not very intuitive.

If you have Windows XP Professional, you can go to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management then select storage -> disk management there you can create partitions (theres a more indepth article about this at http://www.d-silence.com/feature.php?id=246)

The only real problem is that if your hard drive contains one big all-encompassing partition, you will have to resize it -- I do not think that the Computer Management program can do that, but I do know that Partition Magic can.

i just did the exact same thing on this PC. wen i was installin, i made a 10GB partition to install on. then i booted up, downloaded partition magic and all my other programs etc etc. then i got partition magic and made a 175GB (? weird) partition for all my other crap. twas kinda easy. tho i've used partition magic before so...

ps ye i'd recommend partition magioc over anything else.

It's not free, so you might find a demo or something.
On the free side though, if you've got a good connection, and are interested in linux, try mepis, the live cd has qtparted on it, which will do what you want AFAIK

    http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html for BootIt-NG

Fully functional trialware and much cheaper than most if you decide to buy. Suggest to not install it on the hard drive but cancel setup when it is run from a boot floppy or boot cd that you make from the download. Go into Maintenance Mode and Partition Work to do all your partitioning tasks. All details are on pdf manual included in the non-bloated download.
