Quick urgent question, are banks open today (24th)? Have a cheque that I really need to cash, so if someone could shed some light on my lack of knowledge.

    Thanks in advance.

It's about time they started opening weekends to reflect society, as most other things do now. It's an essential service that should be open to reflect retail.

Banks should open on a Saturday. Most of use work Monday to Friday(Saturday).
I for one can't reach my bank at regular intervals because of work.
Maybe even if the post office was open all day saturday and half day on a sunday it might help. At least lodgements/withdrawals and payment of pills would be possible for those of use that work long hours.

I hate the hours that banks operate.

Some day we should have a rising...

    ...or a petition or something.

I'm living in the UK at the moment and the banks (well, the one I'm with, HSBC) opens on a Saturday from 9 until 3 or something like that.
Much more practical, really and a fair balance too I guess, but over here retail banks take every oppertunity to shut, lazy bastards.
I wonder if bank of Scotland will do something odd like that when it rolls out fully in Ireland, would be a nice way to shake up the market (given that it's the first proper foreign bank to set up shop in Ireland, it might operate in a new way)

EBS Building Society opens on Saturday (the Westmorland Street Branch) but I don't know whether it is open on Christmas Eve.

Go to your local pub - ask for the manager - tell him/her your predicament and in the christmas spirit they should cash the cheque

Could you use internet banking? Not sure about it, but if your stuck, it might be handy.

You employer can cash it for you. I used to get all my cheques cashed by my employer cos i had no card at the time to pay me in my account. It deppends on the cheque, and the person who gave it to you. You may be forced to change it only in a AIB/BOI branch.
I worked(paint) for my school one summer and got a cheque from the principal, in my own name. And went with one of the cleaners of the school to change it to a shop nearby. She bought tea for teachers ,she was regular customer there and i got a sandwitch, payed with money from the cheque, and got my change(i signed my name and address on the back of the cheque). This is the way i changed my cheque in cash. And the shop owner payed for the bread delivery with my cheque plus some cash.

    I hope it helps you!
