Go for daily walks and maybe buy an exercise bike. Do exercise daily until you are feeling fitter and then maybe go to the gym too. Change your eating patterns, cut out fast food, drink, fries, snacks, etc. Try to eat more veg and fruit, more meats like chicken and more fish. drink lots of water. You'll see results after five weeks.

now all thats left is the easy part........

Hi Alan_C. Fair play to you for looking for help. I've heard great stories from weight watchers recently but you'll have to realise that this won't happen overnight. Try making small changes but once you've commited to not eating a particular type of food then don't go back.

Say to yourself that you deserve a better life than being morbidly obese.

    Best of luck.

Okay, i don't want this to seem like a very harsh post, because it is not meant to be, but at your age and your weight it can really only be too things.

    1) Some form of medical issues, it which case, go to your doctor. The will be able to offer great advice and help. That is what they are there for.

    2) ( this is the harsh bit ) You simply eat too much and do to little. As said earlier you have made the first step, but now you need to keep on walking. IF your weight is what it is due to overeating and no excercise you have only yourself to blame BUT WHEN YOU MAKE THE CHANGES the credit will be all yours.

Do you see what i am getting at here?

I know that people will post after me saying it's tough being a teenager and there are all sorts of reasons to eat yourself to death ( and believe me, thats what you are doing ) but the only person who can control you is you. So start excercising some self control and will power. Get on the net, down the library and read up on nutrition and excercise. Start walking every day, stop eating crap and get down to it.

No one is going to come and hold your hand until your as thin as you want to be. When i was a kid i ate too much and did to little. Doing my Leaving Cert i had an attitude, thinking that i was eating because other things we making me depressed. Guess what? I was wrong. I was eating because i had **** all self control and no self esteem. So work on both, get the knowledge you need and you will be fine.

And don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it, because you can. Sure, it will be a long road, but it's made up of small steps and then ones before make the next ones easier. It's time to gain your independance from the things that hold you back, but you need to be the main driving force to your own sucess.

We and others can help, but nobody can hold your hand.

So once again, if situation 1) applies, get to your doctor, if situation 2) applies then get reading, get walking and get healthy.

Post you current eating for one typical day please.

What are the consequences if you take NO ACTION!!

Do you really want more of the same for the next 20-80 years of your life?

With any change it's vitally important to take it one step at a time, and this goes for any fitness regime or change in diet. Yes, take responsibility for your situation, understand the medical and psychological consequences of not changing it, and take at least one positive step every day to change the situation for the better, but no, don't beat yourself up over it. (Excuse the use of the Vicky Pollard catchphrase template!)

One of the most important things is awareness of the situation, such as awareness of:
    • how many hours you spend sitting/watching TV/playing games;
    • when and where you eat, and whether it's related to academic/domestic stress/comfort eating;
    • the "go on, another slice of cake won't make any difference" line that's touted by doting aunts makes a bloody huge difference and all adds up when you're eating that additional slice of cake over weeks, months and years!
There are other reasons for excessive food intake, but these are the most obvious ones. With these reasons in mind, write up a brutally honest food diary over one week and see what a wake-up call it constitutes.

It takes sacrifice and a LOT of effort to lose any amount of weight. The rule "eat less and exercise more" is a simple rule, but it's far from easy to execute, and as Dragan so rightly said, nobody can do it for you.

    {Edit: If there are medical reasons behind your obesity then you'd be well advised to visit your doctor ASAP and not go for any "wonder medication" available online.}

If your food log is not enough to convince you to change, think of your 20s and the consequences of the internal demolition resulting from poor food and activity levels. Then, more positively, think of how much, much better you'll feel about yourself and how much more empowered you'll feel once you start moving, start taking control and see the physical changes in yourself!

Best of luck with it all.

You are 28stone, and 16 years old, no one on this board is qualified to give you any advice, for what is a serious medical condition.

Go see a doctor, this is not a simple case of overeating, but is also a physiological problem.

    Alan,
Your on your way – you obviously realised that you want to change.

This is the first and most important step and you started to take action.

Possibly talk to other people about your plans to change and to take action,
ask them to help you to come up with ideas how to tackle this situation.

    Ask yourself what questions like:
    - What would it be like to be able to do things (you mentioned this in your initial question)?
    - How would you feel when you lost some weight?
    - How would you see yourself if you achieved this?
    - What would it allow you to do if you are a bit lighter?
    - What would you hear from other people around you (compliments regarding your achievement …) if you reduced your weight a bit?
    - Can you start this process yourself? If not, what else do you need? Who else can you ask to assist you?
    - What do else do you need to accomplish this?

Take a piece of paper and write down the questions and answers, it only take a few minutes and see, feel what happens doing this.

“Don’t only think it ink it!”

"If you don’t change today your tomorrow will be like yesterday!"
( A quote I found a good while back, don’t know from whom it is.)
And as some others wrote before – it’s a good idea to see a doctor.

:) Good luck and let us now what steps forward you are taking!

You MUST see a doctor before doing anything else. Any of the advice above may be wrong for you and at your weight you are at real risk.

Is really possible that Alan, a 16 year old, can be 28 stones? That's 178 Kgs! A 30 minute walk would burn over twice as much as normal! That a normal weight with another 100Kgs on top. It must be bad for the internal organs and body to carry that.

Does any suggestions for exercise? I hate walking, I find even going from class to class in school to be really tiring. Im always being told that swimming is good but I dont think I can bring myself to go in to a pool shirtless. And wearing a shirt just draws more attention to myself.:(

you could buy some equipment for home or something.. walking is the best way to start, walk a small bit every day and gradually step it up. walking's not so bad if you're listening to music

this has to be a troll, there are no 28stone 16 year olds in Ireland surely??

Dude, try carrying around a few bags of sugar. Now, if you didn't have to bring around the sugar, you'd be less tired. Thus the fat. Loose it, and walking becomes less of a chore.

Also, do you have a back garden? If yes, get a skipping rope. Skipping isn't much fun, but its something, and after a week or two, you'll find that you have more energy (something to do with you doing exercise, me thinks).

Finally, find something fun. I do the swimming thing if I can, as its "fun", thus I don't mind doing it. The other benifit of doing an exercise you like doing, is that your more likely to keep doing it.

As i said i like swimming, but its just too embarassing, ya know people stare a lot and make comments and even a short walk down the road leaves me tired for the rest of the day. Carrying around a few bags of sugar would make me look like an idiot.

even a short walk down the road leaves me tired for the rest of the day.
Tough, Sorry but if your going to win this battle, then mental toughness is going to be the most important thing of all. Your going to have to develop a stuborness of sorts to get you through it all. And if your getting that tired that quickly, then your in serious trouble as it seems your muscles arent in proportion to the weight your carrying. Most overweight people usually have big leg muscles from carrying the weight.

Even more importantly walking is your only option if your feeling so self conscious so you'd better just muck in and start. Also you'll have to do it twice a day, to try and break your energy problem.

But most importantly if you are for real, then go to a doctor, If your not happy with your gp's advice or attitude then ask for referral to a specialised practice.

    Good luck.

Of course any walking will get you tired, it is the equivalent of a normal weight man giving another man a piggy back all around all day. A short walk is better than nothing, carrying around the weight will burn a lot of calories anyway. I would imagine some weight watchers group would have special swimming classes where they book the pool to themselves so only other overweight people will be there to stop embarassment. That weight would be harmful to your joints so non-impact excercise like swimming is probably best. But certainly see a doctor. Cycling may be ok.

    Alan,
I just send a text to a clinical nutritionist, who worked already with similar clients like yourself, to see if she knows anybody that she could recommend, that you could contact (doctor, nutritionist, exercise specialist).

She probably won’t be able to look after you, as she is going to leave Ireland within a few weeks. I work for her and know she is working in the this field since a good few years, worked for the Irish Sports Council, wrote articles for various Irish newspapers and magazines, I think she even hosted a health/nutrition slot in a UK TV programme etc…. I just think she knows here stuff and is a nice person to work with.

As soon as I hear from here I will let you know.

    Martin

Does weight watchers cost money? If so how much? I woud feel kinda strange though, being a 16 year old guy and probably being the fattest person there.

Why not? Because this type of thing can only happen in America?

Dude, you gotta get over this hang up. You don't want to be fat, but you use the fact that you are fat as an excuse not to do anything that might change it.

Before you can overcome the physical you will need to overcome the mental. The later will always be a shackle on the former unless you overcome your own self image.
