BSOD on startup.

I keep getting a BSOD just before getting to the login screen.

The error isn't very helpful, it just displays the memory location.

The only thing unusual I can think of doing is disabling something under the hardware tab in Sounds and Audio Device Properties. Cant remember exactly what it was, and it doesnt show up in safe mode.

So, you can get login to safe mode?

Run a thorough scandisk. Could be a hard drive on its way out. If it's not, you could try reinstalling drivers individually.....though my first instinct is a corrupt file (i.e. bodged hdd).

Looks like a corrupt driver alright. Try the Driver tool mentioned here.

If you were messing with the audio drivers try uninstalling them from safe mode and the reinstalling them in normal mode.

I used system restore to go back to (you'll love this) just before I installed the beta patch for Quake 4.

Seems to work fine now, but Im going to restart and see if it happens again.

The device I disabled was Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device - Ive re-enabled it just in case.

In device manager under Non-Plug and Play Drivers, PartMgr is reporting

This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)

That's not good. First thing I'd do right now is backup all critical files. Then run a hdd diagnostic. There's a list of them here for different makes of hdd.

If that comes up ok then it might be an idea to reinstall whatever service pack you're on to reinstall any missing/corrupt files.

Out of curiosity did you happen to notice the file that was causing the bsod? It would have been on the last line of the blue screen.

It's not like a regular BSOD, it doesn't show any file.

I tried using the Western Digital tools but they wont install in safe mode.

I got the tools working and ran a complete scan. It turned up nothing.
