Joss Whedon lets ''Firefly'' go -- The ''Serenity'' director may turn to ''Buff the Vampire Slayer'' for his next big-screen project by Jeff Jensen

When Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon looks back on 2005, he can take comfort in knowing that his film-directing debut, the sci-fi Western Serenity, resurrected his canceled-too-soon cult classic TV series Firefly, and was also one of the year's best-reviewed movies. ''I should say I'm above reading reviews,'' he says. ''But I would be lying.'' Alas, Whedon's fond memories are also tainted by Serenity's status as a franchise nonstarter; despite Universal's best marketing efforts, the film only mustered $25 million. ''In the end, it was what it was: a tough sell,'' says Whedon, adding that it appears the Firefly saga has reached its conclusion. He has no regrets — and he's moving on. He's currently penning a Wonder Woman flick for Warner Bros., and has the thriller Goners set up at Universal; he'll direct whichever...

Subscription required for the rest of the article, but bugger.

I guess the movie killed off too many characters anyway.

    NTM

I had heard about $36 worldwide, about what it cost to make.

It was always acknowledged that the killing would be made in DVD sales and other franchise merchandising.

There seem to be conflicting reports about this as in another interview (I don't have a link handy, sorry) he says that if the DVD does well he'll be ecstatic at the idea of making a sequel. I guess it all depends on how the DVD does.

I think the film has pretty much made back its budget by now.
    Universal's best marketing efforts
I'm sorry, but that made me laugh.

EDIT: I think EW may be taking his quotes out of context. Bah. But maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Hmmmm the day the DVD comes out Joss Whedon tells the world that the future of Serenity/Firefly depends on DVD sales...

It was taken out of context... That's not what he meant at all.

Thats 25 million in the states. It made a further 10 million everywhere else, which puts it at roughly 35. Heard it cost about 40 million.

Bearing in mind, I dont think the above include DVD sales, just what it made in the cinemas

Well given that the DVD went on sale 2 days ago I don't think they have figures worth mentioning etc yet.

I don't know though. It'd be sad to see it completely die out. I'll admit I cried when Wash died. He was my favorite character. But, there has to be some life left in it. The series was wonderful. The movie was wonderful. People all over the world like it. If only they can get some good marketing. Then we might see a continuation of the Big Damn Heroes on the silver screen a few more times.

I know that if it's completely dead though. That there will be many angry fans that I've recruited in Alabama.

Took in a little over $25mil in the US, nearly $13mil internationally. so thats $38mil. 1mil short of its $39mil production costs (not including marketing).

I heard it made up to just 1 million under the cost of making the film.
So hopefully The DVD does really good, the signs so far indicate that it is selling very well.
