ok, so my lovely new mobo arrived today, and i went to install it.

    and whats happened?
some crafty manufacturers decided it would be 'cool' to stick 4 more pins onto a system board power connector.

someone please tell me that i can ignore the 4 pins on the end????

or i can at least buy a 20pin to 24pin convertor?

You can ignore the extra 4 pins, assuming your PSU isn't crappy.

This really is happening to more and more people everyday. I'd Imagine how annoying it is though to buy a new system and realise the motherboard requires 24pins and your PSU is only 20 Pin

do a search; this has happened twice that i remember in the last few weeks.
Where did you buy the parts from?

i usually buy everything from ebuyer tbh.

i have it up and running (obviously, since im posting :)), but i do have a 500watt psu running, so im guessing its ok.

although, i suspect i will just get a new one with the 24pins at some stage sooner rather than later.

thanks for the links though, i appreciate it.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago and yes you just ignore the last 4 pins and it isn't a problem . Actually there should have been a blanking plate ( well thats the word I am using to call the little piece of black plastic :) ) with the mobo for this very purpose .

For the mods here , I can see this becomming a FAQ , although I thought I titled my thread to make it easy to find .

well, everything seems to be running fine, but i havent put the system under any pressure yet, so will wait and see, but again, i will probably just buy a new psu when i get the chance.
of course, i will probably completely forget and when i go to buy my next system board it will need 3 x 54pin connectors, a small hamster wheel and cheese board!

Should be fine. My own board came with a block in the extra four pins (that you'd have to take out if you actually had a 24 pin connector). Basically, it's just a second 12V connection to provide extra juice to the board. With a 500W PSU you're probably going to be fine unless you're running a very high end system.

Or using a board that requires extra stability - the DFI Lanparty series are one.
Newer PSU's also come with 8pin connectors - basically two 4 pin P4 connectors stuck together.

yep, ive actually got the additional 12v 4pin connector and there is a socket to plug it into, but thats for the CPU afaik.

i also have a funny looking straight 6pin plug from my psu, and i have no idea what that connects to.
    anyone any ideas?

Does it not work with the extra four pins empty? Humbug I says!

That extra 4 pin connector is for the cpu and should go elsewhere on your mobo (and shouldn't fit in the ATX connector).

The extar 6 pin thing is for PCI-E graphics cards, better than the auld molex job.
