    Fares rise unveiled
    20/12/2005 - 19:33:05

Bus, rail and and Luas fares are to rise by 3.8% in the New Year, it emerged tonight.

Both CIE and Luas had applied for fare increases of up to 7.5%.

But Transport Minister Martin Cullen said that he had decided the 3.8% increase was more appropriate.

He said he was conscious of the requirement to achieve a balance betwen the impact on the CIE and Luas customers and the need to sustain the financial health of the companies.

Bloody public sector off looking for money again. They should outsource the lot of it and get rid of the damn unions.

Oh hang on - they did that for Luas and they also looked for more than they got (just like any good business should do) ! ;-0

Luas, CIE prices to increase by 3.8%

    December 20, 2005 19:52
The Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has decided that an increase of 3.8% on Luas and CIE fares was appropriate after CIE and Luas put forward applications for increases up to 7.5%.

The Luas does not intend for the 3.8% increase to affect customers who use smart cards or ticket agents to purchase their tickets in an attempt to reduce the lengthy queues on Luas platforms.

The Minister said he was conscious of the requirement to achieve a balance of the impact on Luas and CIE customers and the need to sustain the financial health of the companies.

I've read this headline on page on of the "Metro" today:
    Metro wrote:
"The Bad News - LUAS, DART, and Bus fares to rise 4pc"

I didn't have the paper, it was from a passenger, so I couldn't read the whole thing as to when this will happen.

Dear Dart, Dublin Bus, and Luas,

have you considered that there people out there that are not earning as much as you do? And that these people actually don't have that much money but rely on your services?

    No?

    Thought so.

I have gotten the feeling that they don't care at all about passengers - the drivers and people who work for one of the three transport corporations gets his money anyway - from the tax payer.

    AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!

Those things just make me angry. Sorry for the rant.

    Transport fares to rise again?
    Fuel costs to rise again?
    Insurance costs to rise again?
The cost of living to rise again?
Welcome to rip off Republic, you rip me off, I rip you off and so on, Dublin bus have to increase fares to pay extra costs themselves, they are not operating for a profit, they are a state run company, and as far as Im concerned any increase in fares in another form of taxation, we give Dublin bus money instead of subside's from the state. although €1.75 form Dun Loaghaire to the Airport isnt too bad.

some of the rail fares here are pretty cheap that elsewhere in Europe. Plus the entire intercity fleet will be replaced by 2008.

    Press Release - Fares Increase

The Railway Procurement Agency will increase Luas fares by an average of 3.8%, effective 6 January 2006. This fare increase is necessary to meet the increases in operational and maintenance costs for the Luas service. This will be the first increase in Luas ticket prices since the service was introduced in June 2004. The operation of Luas is intended to be self-financing after a ramp-up period. However, the high passenger numbers on Luas have resulted in this ramp-up period being shorter than anticipated resulting in no State subvention being provided in 2005. Similarly, it is anticipated that no subvention will be sought in 2006.

The RPA is determined to keep the increases to a minimum while ensuring that the highest levels of comfort, service and reliability are maintained.
Sample Luas fares will increase as follows: A single fare from Heuston to Connolly will increase from €1.30 to €1.40; a single fare from Sandyford to St Stephen’s Green will increase from €2.00 to €2.10 and a return fare from Tallaght to the City Centre will increase from €3.80 to €3.90.

It should be noted that not all fares will increase at this time. There will be no increase in child fares.

Luas continues to offer better value when customers pay for travel using weekly, monthly and annual passes or by using the Luas Smartcard for less predictable patterns of travel. No fare increase will apply when passengers pay for travel by Luas Smartcard or for travel passes bought from Luas ticket agents. Savings can also be made by passengers using 7 day, 30 day and annual tickets where average fare increases will be less than for the single and return tickets.

Full details of the new schedule of Luas fares are available on www.luas.ie

    Let me get this straight,
the RPA are not increasing the fares for those using smart cards,
because if more people use smart cards, it will reduce the queues at the ticket machines.

I know it's not comparing like with like,
but will NTR follow the RPA's lead,
and declare that they will not increase the toll fares for those using easypass,
because if more people use easypass, it will reduce the queues at the toll bridge!

Eh hello . . . in a country where a train that is 9 and a half minutes late is considered to be "on time"? Come to Cork and enjoy spontaneous train cancellations to areas with no alternative transport forms (except of course, the next train, in 45 minutes time, after you've already waited 30 minutes for the one they've just cancelled).

Its cheap, but its NOT value for money.
From my experience in Europe anyway, you pay by distance, but there is absolutely no comparison between the services. Its like going back to the DDR circa the mid 1950s when travelling in Ireland.
