You'd be as well just to grab a memory card for the moment to get started... it's almost impossible to find the HDDs at the moment.

The memory card is 35 euro for 64Mb which is a fairly reasonable price really, I remember paying 50 for a 16Mb PS2 card.

Yeah, it's an ok price in the context of memory cards, but when you plan on getting a HDD you see just how much of a waste it is, of course when you don't have a choice...

As for size difference in mem cards, how is the 64mb working out compared to the 8/16mb of a ps2? I assume the game saves are generally bigger, how big is an xbox live account?

I think I was using ~16mb with 1 XBOX Live account, and 3/4 Kameo Saves games, nothing else.

It depends how lazy developers are. Some games the saves are only a few kilobytes and others are a lot more, my Project Gotham save is 11Mb last time I checked, while Call of Duty is tiny.

There's no reason for save games to be big, Gran Turismo 4 had a heck of a lot more data to remember(hundreds of cars, each individually upgraded and tweaked) when you turned on than PGR3 does and it's save was tiny, but when developers are assuming everyone has hard drives their not gonna bother spending time optimizing game saves.

The memory card is only listed as 50-something megabytes, presumably there's an area reserved for xbox live and system data like the hard drive. Currently I'm comfortable fitting PGR3, CoD2, PDZ, Madden and an xbox live arcade game on one memory card. Obviously I have to keep deleting and downloading different Arcade games when I want to change.
