I took this shoot using a flash with gels, I got the gel sample free from this site, just stuck them on from of the flash head. I like the effect.

what camera settings did u set?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 911 ✭✭✭heffsarmy

Used a canon 20d, the shutter was pretty slow something around 1/60 at F8 or so, it was the flash that froze the droplet, the flashes were powered down to 1/64 of the full power, this is equavalent as far as I remember to a shutter speed of 1/12000 of a sec, the flash range is very poor at this power output, check out the guide numbers, there were about 1 and half feet away from the water tray. Used 3 canon 550ex one as master and ther other 2 as slaves.

the colour is gaudy and the subject matter cliché

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 911 ✭✭✭heffsarmy

Monkey what an indepth response you have given, this really makes me think the shot is tacky...the subject matter maybe be a cliche but give it try yourself you might learn something.

I beg your pardon? What kind of analysis do you want? Do you expect a 1000 word critique? The colour is gaudy. Its acidic. The image looks ridiculous.

You posted your image on a public forum so I presume you are open to criticism.

Whatever about tackiness, it's a nice image - it's a moment in time, sure it's a cliche, but it's a nicely captured cliche; and anyway, water's a lovely subject matter. Especially when it's mimicing a lens coming right back at you

When did everyone become so objectional and adversarial? fucck, it's a grand piece of photography, ansel adams isnt going to come looking for his muse back but so what

go do better, then post more

Monkey cirtisim is good, be it constructive or bad, the replies I have had on this post are that the image is, 'cool' 'tacky' and 'nice', from my point of view I'd rather have bad critisim were it is constructive, not a 1000 words as I would'nt read it...the image looks ridiculous as you say, tell me how to improve on this image as I'm willing to learn. I agree open forums are great...I posted this picture one another web forum, www.photosig.com and got back great feedback, you were my first critique that thinks the image looks ridiculous, it would be great if you could help me improve the photo. Also shrimp I noticed you edited your post, if you say something about a pic stand by it, say no more. To be honest I only stuck this post up so people could avail of the free gels from Rosco website, but its good to get all the feedback.

Not everyone is going to like what you do, some people might feel that the subject matter is done quiet a bit. Personally I think it's grand, but not everyone might.

This cliché earned me €600, although the colour was slightly more tasteful.

Great shot, very well captured - just a pity about the colours, try blue maybe?

How did you trigger the camera? I've just bought a photogate for this kind of thing, but haven't set it up yet, but before I used do all this stuff by pure guesswork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 911 ✭✭✭heffsarmy

Cian this was pure guess work no trigger was used. I just got a sound trigger which is great for the bursting of ballons and the like. This is a great website for liquid shots.

Just so I follow the technic used, the room (or area of water) is pitch black as the shutter opens, and the flash triggers at very low power for 1/12000 of a second, causing the imagine to light up and be captured by the film (or CMOS sensor) and then goes out again plunging the area into darkness again. So effectively you have a 1/12000 shutter speed image

    Cool :D

I like it,Ive seen it done before, never tried it.But I can acknolodge the time and effort it takes to shoot this type of shot from scratch.
Heffsarmy well done on a great photo.

wicknight thats exactly the way the technique works...this technique is also used for photography hummingbirds, The flash duration can be as fast as 1/50000 of a sec from a hotshoe flash but the distance between the flash and the subject is minimal...if your interested I just done a quick google and got this website which basically explains the technique.
