lack of space...

since getting broadband (just over two months ago) and getting back into single player gaming i've a severe shortage of space on my two main drives.

    WD raptor 36gig (windows)
    IBM deskstar 120gig (everything else)

you all know the amount of crap you download and also with most game installs taking upwards of 5gigs and i'm running out...fast at that too.

just after christmas i'm planning on buying two new hard drives but i'm undecided which to go for.

there's a few combinations i was thinking of...

    from komplett

    2 x Samsung spinpoint 250gig = 121.00 x 2 = 242.00
    2 x Seagate barracudda 250gig = 121.00 x 2 = 242.00

so that would be 252.00 including delivery

    or

    from overclockers

    2 x Seagate barracuda 300gig = 325.00 including delivery.

the second option gives me an extra 100gigs to play around with.

what i'd like to know which are the better of the two drives?, the quietest of the two drives?, and the reputation of the two drives.

would it be worth the extra 70 odd euros for an extra 100gigs?

(all drives will be SATA drives)

also if i buy SATA2 cables will they still work (motherboard is a ABIT IC7-G MAX2).

I'm planning on getting two of these next week. A terabyte of storage will be nice :)

I got x2 Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300gb SATA hdd's when setting up my server (admittedly, one was for my personal pc... but as the psu for that is long in waiting and the fact that I filled up the first lot far too easily when backing up my cds, I used both)

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=309277&cks=PRL

These Maxtor Diamondmax 10s have a better Gigs/Euro ratio than anything else on komplett. The Diamondmax 9s were supposed to be **** (I have the 9s myself and haven't had any issues, they're really quiet and run cool), but I havent heard anything bad about the Diamondmax 10s

    €123 for 300 gigs.

    That gives you €123 x 2 = 246
    Plus €10 delivery
Gives you €256 for 600 gigs. Fairly nice deal compared to overclockers. They're a fookin awful company to deal with from what I've heard anyway. Shipping aint cheap to ireland from them either.

i've had nothing but good dealings with overclockers, as since 2 out of 3 maxtor drives i've had failed on me i somehow think i'll pay a little extra to avoid them.

    ohh just another note,

i'm planning on retiring the ibm drive as it is quite old now, and keep the raptor as a windows drive.

also i'm not sticking these in any sort of a RAID form so i ain't going that route :p

I'd say avoid OcUK and go with Komplett. Demon is right about Overclockers.co.uk. They are ok until something goes wrong and then you realise what a pack of t0$$ers they really are. They couldn't give a stuff about their customers because they only treat them like s*** when it comes to aftersales service. I have been trying to get some faulty ram RMA'ed from them since early October, when the ram was first sent back to them. Every time I contact them it's a case of 'oops, sorry, we will get that sorted and sent out to you as soon as possible", but it never comes, and it's the same reply the next time you contact them.

I have always used Maxtor and have not had a problem to them so far "touch Wood". The last time i had to go with WD as maxtor were all out of stock. Got my drives from komplett.

lol i know what's taking up my space, and all of it is needed

    tv shows............................ 31 gigs
    mp3's................................ 25 gigs
    games............................... 30 gigs
files & program installations... 12 gigs

that's all on the ibm drive.

i've given up on getting the 300gig'ers from overclockers and i'll ask komplett if they'll be getting them in stock.

i will only use maxtor if komplett can't get the drives in and have a good long hard think about it.

you'd be suprised how many people don't

BTW: if it's needed have you any plans for backup or just to DVD or the IBM

as for €70 for 100GB sounds like it's a bit much, don't forget that they keep dropping in price so buy the best value one now and put the €100 into the fund for the next drive. Or if you don't intend to mirror or something buy a single 250GB and then every 6-12 months buy the best value drive - cos you won't ever have enough space and it's an ongoing thing.

the mp3's are backed up on my iriver, and the tv shows and files and things are on an external drive so you could wipe my hard drives right now and all i'd lose are my game saves which is only one game (COD2 and i'm only on the second level.)

hmm i don't think i'll be able to set up a fund tbh, the money will just stare me in the face until i spend it.

hopefully prices will have dropped after christmas (time i'm going to be buying).

2 years ago around this time i would think. It cost me 121euros to get a 160gig drive. Now for that same price i got my WD320gig but would have liked to have got the 300gig Maxtor drive but none in stock at the time.
