    Folks,
Could somebody please explain either by words or diagrams how to take a heatsink and fan off a Socket-A processor (Asus motherboard) erm, without breaking it :)
Also - I'm taking it off to apply fresh thermal paste (It's it's been three years since I put the processor on) is this safe enough to do?

    Cheers,
    S.

On one side of the heatsink clip, there is usually a notch for inserting a flat head screwdriver, although some heatsinks provide a piece of metal for pushing with your finger, push down on the clip and then lever the clip away from the notches of the socket, the other side then should easily unhook and lift the heatsink straight off.

    What daywalker said.

It's perfectly safe to take it off. And the clips make sure that it goes back on in the right place. It's up to you to make sure that you apply enough thermal paste and don't let it bleed over the edges in case the one you have is conductive.

[edit]Why do you feel you need to apply more thermal paste? Are you getting temperature alerts? If so, my first port of call would be the airflow in the case - blockages by cables, fans clean and operational etc.

well, after pulling the HS off, its always a good idea to clean down and reapply the paste.

    This stuff is really good:

Ideally you want to get some IPA (AKA rubbing alcohol) to clean both the CPU and HS down.
