Michelin f1 exit at end 2006.

    Michelin are to pull out of f1 at the end of 2006. Saying that they are not interested when F1 goes to a single make tyre supply in 2008.

    Sad to see that Michelin is packing it in, maybe too many run ins with the FIA?

    F1 is always better when 2 (even 3!) tyre companies are fighting it out, the lap records are lowered by 2/3secs at nearly all circuits.

    The fact that Ferrari have refused to sign to the testing milage ban like all other teams is part of the reason why the FIA has been forced to switch to a single supplier. They could have easily reduced costs if Bridgestone(Ferrari) and Michelin (the rest) agreed and ahered to teh testing ban, but because Ferrari pretty much do what they want maybe the only solution is one supplier.

    Lets hope all the Michelin runners dominate next year and give Bridgestone a lesson in how to make quality racing rubber.

    Not really. Teams are now building full scale wind tunnels(far more expensive) and spending much more time in them. Sauber even have a wind Tunnel which can easily accomodate 2(full scale) cars. They initially intended to use it to help making over-taking other cars easier but in the end i suspect they really used it to make their cars impossible to pass.

    The cost of running (or renting) a windtunnel is a huge expence that teams are spending millions on, some of the top teams keep their Windtunnel running 24hrs a day with 2 shifts of Aero staff to maximise having your own tunnel.

    However the tire tests which is also where the teams can gain/lose a lot of performance on the stop watch, is a huge cost with Ferrari, Mclaren etc having test teams separate to the race team, pounding thousands of miles round Paul Ricard, Barcalona etc. ( they do test new aero bits, new mechanical etc) but a lot of the tests are set up to run long programme to test new compounds etc, tires that give good one lap qualifying speed as well as race long durability.

    Teams spend millions of running Test teams mainly for tire preformance as well.

    ....but some of these costs are subsidised by the tire manufacturer. Ferrari obviously being paid more than most as they were the sole developer of the bridgestone tire.
