You tried to take a picture of your crotch and mis-aimed?

Macro photography allows you to be extremely selective about what is in focus and what is not.. In this photo, I don't think the point of focus is placed very well - perhaps it would have been better to place it so that the brand / logo is in sharp focus, not the black area. That's enough.. I'm not spending any more time critiquing what is basically a picture of a crotch. Next time, take a picture of your phone or something..

man, it's grand. I know what you were trying to do. You liked the look of the metal texture. Keep on taking photos, try things that aren't so obvious like wood grain maybe? or something similar. The key to good macro in my opinion is good lighting, you don't want it to be flooded with all white light, you want it to have some nice contrast, making it interesting. etc..

See - Shrimp can be nice!

Think its a grand one, keep working with the focus though, you could bring the focus into something more interesting.

I was going to ask the same question.. Having also seen this pop up in another thread, I think sometimes a distinction is made between a picture and a photograph based on it's quality etc - a photograph is something which may have taken time / effort, but a picture is more like a "pic" or a "snap". It's not a distinction I'd make.

I think he means that it doesn't really consitute as artistic photography, but then again where do you draw the line? Once thought was put into the photo, then I would consider it photography.. within reason.

And how can you really define art?

One mans art is another mans rubbish.

As long as he likes it then leave him off.

    It's an image!

A fine image too. So the 'Diesel' logo on the belt is slightly out of focus, but it's more than enough to be still clear. The pattern on the belt forward of the buckle appears to be the sharpest point of focus. Also the seam on the top of the jeans can be seen sharp in the same 'plane of focus' as the belt pattern. This is a product of close up photography, whereby the closer you get to the subject, the narrower the depth of field is and the more critical the focus is.

But let's face it, the lighting is beautiful for the subject, although probably not set up to any extent. I would say without any hesitation, if any of us saw this on an ad for this company, it would be just what would be expected. Not every big money advertising campaign for every product has the brand name in perfect focus.

Overall, the feel is right, the bit of skin, not too much, the product name placement, the detail in the jeans, the leg raised, the little bit of sensual mystery. It's asking questions of the viewer. A great image for me. One criticism, constructive, I might add, is the highlight in the background is a little distracting and draws the eye away somewhat. This is easily remedied. Keep it simple in the background and a medum tone. Not too bright to catch the eye, or not too dark for important edge detail to disappear into. The aim is keeping all attention on the subject.

Well done and keep up the good work.

Karoma, that's an excellent page you've linked to. Very helpful and informative.

    Exactly!

That's what should matter. Especially when your just starting off on a DSLR, no point in jumping in at the deep end, trying to do masterpieces!

I liked it as well. Thought the lighting in it was a bit off but otherwise grand!

It's an image for learning more about photography. To an untrained eye, it's a picture if a belt.
Why a belt? What made you take a photograph of a belt? Why not a chair or an ornament? What made you decide on a belt?

Well, for a start, it appears that the light source (a window) is infront of you, casting a shadow on the entire image. The glare of the light is out of focus (top left) and is taking the viewer's attention away from the main center of the image (the logo), which is half out of focus itself.

Ignore the unconstructive negative replies - a very good pic. I'd liked to have seen a little more depth of field, but other than that well done.
