    Hi all.

New to this thread, so bear with me. I have to create an edible (hopefully  ) trifle for a competition this evening on a budget of €3. Having never made a trifle at all before this raises numerous problems. Suggestions of recipes or cheap (but decent quality) ingredients welcome ASAP! Thanks!

    1 Swiss roll (strawberry preferably)
    1 packet of strawberry jelly
    1 can of fruit cocktail
Some custard (ready made if you can afford it)
    some strawberry jam (budget permitting)
    small tub of cream

Purchase all of the above in Aldi/Lidl to make your €3 go further, or get the Tesco Value equivelants if you can

    1) Slice swiss roll and place at bottom of bowl.
    2) Spread with strawberry jam thinly over the slices (if you have some).
    3) Dissolve jelly, with a little less water than the packet advises and leave to cool slightly.
    4) Scatter fruit cocktail over the swiss roll slices
    5) Pour jelly over swiss roll slices/fruit and allow to cool.
    6) Make custard/use a ready-to-serve carton (check the instructions on the pack) and pour this over the swiss roll/fruit/jelly part.
    7) If custard is hot, leave to cool
    8) Whip cream and place over cold custard layer

This is a pretty basic trifle recipie, but if you have to do it on a budget, it should work out for you.

    Packed of chivers jelly.
    Tin of fruit cocktail
Sponge. can be bought in packets.
    Hot water.
    Sherry or whiskey or brandy

in a bowl add the jelly and some hot water, stir untill all the jelly disolves.
wait till it cools a bit, add in the fruit and the sponge. and the alcohol.

wait until it sets. usually takes the best part of a day.
    serve with fresh cream /icecream.

Good luck. This is a very basic trifle and not difficult. It's the one we made when we were kids.
