For large quantities, it can work out pretty expensive. You'd be cheaper off getting either a flat bed scanner with a decent slide scanning attachment (cheap-ish) and doing them yourself, or get a proper film/slide scanner (more expensive), scan the lot and then sell the scanner afterwards. All it's cost you then is whatever loss you make on the cost of the scanner (plus a lot of time, of course!)

Hi Andrew, I assume high quality isnt an issue.
Do you have a digital camera? Theres a thingie called a slide duplicator that attaches onto a lens. See this link to get an idea of what it does.

I'm not recomending that make/model its just to give you an idea. Check your camera and see if its suitable etc before you buy.

That thing costs £70 sterling (€100+)! You can get a pretty decent flatbed scanner (Epson 3490 Photo or Canon CanoScan 4200F) with slide scanning attachments for €95 or thereabouts from the likes of komplett.ie.

I am chilled .. what makes you think I'm not ? :) It's just that £70 for what's little more than a metal tube seems a bit steep to me, that's all, and a scanner can be used for so much more if he hasn't got one already. Two birds, one stone and all that.

Chances are someone has done this already, i.e. bought a piece of hardware to scan in slides and then sell it on. I'd check ebay and see if a decent one is available second-hand. It'll probably be in good nick if the seller only used it for as long as you're planning to use yours...

... or try and borrow one from somebody for a while, which is what I ended up doing. Cost me a bottle of wine for a week's loan of a sooper-dooper Minolta dedicated film/slide scanner. Be aware that it's pretty mind numbing work if you've got lot's of slides, and then there's the job of somehow cataloging them all afterwards.

Well you missed the bit where I said that I wasnt recomendng that make or model. I've seen them go on ebay for £5 sterling. If you've a lot of slides these things are quicker and work with video cameras also.

I've an epson 4870 and i would not like to spend a few days scanning a few hundred slides, thats for sure :D

Firstly apologies for bringing up an old thread. Like the OP I have loads of slids I'd like to scan.
I see the Epson 3490 Photo and Canon CanoScan 4200F on komplett for < €100, and before I buy one I have just one question.
I presume they handle 'mounted' slides ?

My grandmother has a few slides 20-30 which she would like to transfer to photograph rather than have them on a cd/dvd. Set i n her ways a bit.

    How much would this cost?

I've now got an Epson Photo RX620 printer/scanner which scans slides and negatives, and assuming the holders are the same as on the standalone scanners, then yes, they do accept mounted slides.

My results so far with scanning slides have been surprisingly good, with negatives, less so for some reason, with the results appearing far grainier than the corresponding prints would suggest. Dust is also a huge problem, since there's no hardware dust removal like on dedicated film scanners.
