When I start up my mac the first thing I do is change the location to either wifi or office (depending where I am) and then fire up os x mail.

Recently though every time I open mail with an active internet connection it freezes and I get the spinning beach ball.

I've force quit mail, unplugged the ethernet cable and opened it again - works fine and I can see the inbox again, plug in the ethernet cable again and click get mail - same thing...

Again forcing quit to get out of mail, unplug ethernet cable again, open up mail, put all accounts into offline mode, plug in cable. I figured I'd check each account individually - maybe there's something dodgy going on on one of the servers - but no checking them each individually works fine - altogether crashes the app, so I'm forced to check each mail acc manually

This has been going on since friday, anyone got an suggestions here, it's annoying the hell out of me!!!

Always first thing to do in those cases:

Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility

Choose the drive on which OS X is on and click "Repair Permissions".

If this does not help, download the combined update for your OS.

    - 10.3.9 when using "Panther"
    - 10.4.3 when using "Tiger"

Also, download the latest security update, then reboot your machine. If this still doesn't help, I don't have an idea yet.

Ran the disk utility, no joy.

I've got all the latest updates and patches for Tiger...

I've come up with a work around however, I've created a new mail account but left it disabled and offline, it seems to work for the moment until I do the yearly reformat next month.
