Several years in the making, the brand new hardware from Gates 'N Company has been receiving plenty of consumer hype in the past few weeks and has been heralded by some as THE big system watch in the upcoming next-generation console wars.

We're here to tell you that they're wrong.

If all that is true,Sony are going to blow MS out of the water.

Saw that on that site yesterday.
I Got linked to that somehow.
    Ps3 for the win.

Can't wait for it although I was mighty impressed by the Xbox 360.
Went to play it in BT again Qz.

i'm not so impressed. i got one and all, and it's a great machine, but it has no feeling of "next gen" to it. i was wowed by the ps2/xbox a few years ago, just didn't happen now. maybe because i have a decent PC now, i dunno... but i am wowed by the trailers sony are showing us now

Yeah I must agree with that. The e3 presentation was incredible.
I have become more addicted to pc games now rather than console games.

Lol. As projectmayhem said, it doesn't really feel next gen. If I spend over €400 on the newest games console, I expect to be blown away, not just impressed.

Counting the days until the PS3 pre-orders.

    Terrible, terrible article.

Reason #10: Xbox 360 Doesn't Have a Killer App - At this stage either does the PS3, at least wait till we have some indication of launch titles before making claims.

Reason #9: Dual-Screen and 1080p Support - This will end up like 720p games on the Xbox. SFA support for 1080p now and will be a while before it appears in homes. Why wast so much power rendering 1080p when 720p will just becoming the norm.

Reason #8: Hefty Expandability / Connectivity Options - Cause I'm always trying to plug my SD cards and 10 USB devices into the PS2  Even if this does become useful its hardly a reason to buy a console.

Reason #7: You Can Still Pre-Order - By the time preorders appear you could walk out with a Xbox360. Also a stupid reason to wait.

Reason #6: Seven-Player Wireless Support - Finally an actual real reason, but it will be rarely outside of party games and hockey/football/basketball etc. games.

Reason #5: The HD IP Camera - Best reason in the article.

Reason #4: Full Backwards Compatibility - PS2 and PS1 backward compatable will be done by emulation, it could be just as patchy as Microsofts. Rev will also be more backward compatable.

Reason #3: Stronger Japanese Developer Support - Just like the 360 has stronger JPN dev support this time

Reason #2: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - We've seen one cutscene from the game and its already worth buying a console for

Reason #1: The Blu-ray Player - If its anything like the PS2 dvd player you will be better off buying a stand alone Blu-ray player to get decent image quality.

could'nt agree more, i have no doubt sonys hardware will be top notch, but with the 360 already out, xbox live, and the HUGE variety of games (esp. online) sony will take a while before they catch up with 360 sales, but undoubtably, ps3 will oversale the 360 pretty quicky, fanbase is huge in comparison to xbox.

With non-games stuff, one thing I not impressed with the 360 is the media player / storage etc functions.

The media player it self screams “we’ll be able to put a better one in a future update”. The only way to get music on to the console is burning it from CD (which the IMRO says is illegal in Ireland!!!), you can only stream from USB devices (PSP ect) and Windows PCs (with software free from Xbox.com - you can stream music and still images from non Media Centre PCs).

Then there is the case of the “reserved” amount of the hard drive that you can’t touch.

If Sony puts some decent storage in the PS3 and allows you to do every thing the PSP can do it could be far better in non-games terms.

Most of the reasons don't matter to me, but I'd definitely like full backwards compatability, and I'm a big fan of the MGS series.

Xbox 360 has a camera coming soon.

Thos reasons are just stupid. None of them are big deal.

MGS4, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo, Devil May Cry, all the reliable playstation franchises. By then the 360 will have a few of its own too of course, but the likes of MGS and GTA are very big aces to have up your sleeve(far far more than Halo 3 imo)

Why bother with 720p when you can stick with standard definition? It's future proof and it's better to have it than not have it, even if few people take advantage of it at first.

Yea and the PS2 coped just fine with wired pads and without a hard drive and with standard DVDs and with 32Mb of RAM so why bother improving any of that either? If the PS3 runs linux as has been very heavily hinted then it'll be very useful, saves the expense of memory units for save games if you can use types of memory cards your already likely to have in your camera/phone/psp.

    Yea stupid point.
    Ciaran500 wrote:

Party games are the only reason I own a gamecube. The PS2 is completely devoid of anything to touch Monkey Ball / Mario Party etc. Hopefully this will be improved.
    Ciaran500 wrote:

TBH I actually thought it was one of the weaker ones. Everybody's copying Sony's eyetoy next generation, plus as an owner of an eyetoy I can say it's little more than a gimmick, maybe some day there'll be a game to prove me wrong though.
    Ciaran500 wrote:

I don't know if it's been confirmed either way. I'm hoping for full backwards compatibility. I still occasionally put on a PS1 Final Fantasy or Suikoden game.
    Ciaran500 wrote:

Bigger but still not as big as Sony. I don't think there's any arguing that playstation has by far the best 3rd party support, although the gap is indeed closing.
    Ciaran500 wrote:

It showed obvious potential and it's in a series of obvious pedigree. I'll be surprised if it isn't a top quality game and a definite killer app. Although I'm not so sure it'll be out for a good while after the PS3 is.
    Ciaran500 wrote:

Well Blu-Ray is Sony's format and they've put a lot into it. They need it to work and I'll be surprised if they don't make sure it works well on PS3. No doubt 5 years from now there'll be better players, but for the moment the PS3 is the one. And it allows much, much bigger games than the DVD-9 the 360 uses.

They had "ten reasons to get/wait" for both the 360 and Revolution in the same vein... terrible articles. I know IGN's style of writing is extremely plain and dull but these lists are absolutely pathetic. Corporate interface doesn't make anything easier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,853 ✭✭✭Beekay

Was i right in hearing that you will be able to connect your mp3 player
into the ps3 and listen to it while you play games?

Am I completely out of sync with it or is this a fairly accurate statement:

    MGS 1 - Excellent, ground-breaking, etc...

MGS 2 - Very Good, story was a bit all over the place, raiden's not as cool as snake

MGS 3 - Good but...., I got 2/3 of the way through it and quit, nice and cinematic, but no real oomph

    So MGS4?

I can see it as being a huge selling point. Although it has the potential to buck the trend and deliver MGS1esque amazingness.

GTA would be the main reason I'd buy it (when it drops to a manageable €200 or so)

Do Sony and Rockstar still have a close relationship? I read somewhere that after GTA:San An a contract between the two expired and Rockstar would be free to ply their wares to the highest bidder, is there any truth in this?

Articles seem to be very biased tbh. Its the same with the "Xbox vs Revolution" article.

ps3 wont live up to this hype.
    next gen console = dreamcast re-release !

well mgs4 is apparently an open-ended warzone with different factions battling away. you're in the middle. that seems pretty damn cool imo

the sony/rockstar deal ended after SA, but apparently a new (stronger) deal was inked recently with ps3 securing exclusivity on the next GTA game. makes sense for sony, it's a huge draw

    as for €200 ps3. you'll be waiting a while i'd guess.

Rev developers have put it at between $99 and $200 which makes it dirt cheap though ;)

Anyway, on the PS3 side of things Ken Kataguri has practically said the thing will be "reassuringly expensive"... I do believe he said that it'd be an expensive launch console and we are talking about a man who said the PS2 launched cheap so don't hold your breath.

Just got the cash together to get an Xbox 360, then saw a mates, and have to say, wasnt overly impressed. Ive only got a ps2, and i think the Xbox ( Old one, not 360 ) is better than a ps2. I have a decent pc, and so i will never get used to playing FPS's on a console. Might wait for the ps3 now. No point in spending 400 odd euro, on somthing that i wont even play fps's on. Might go for a psp now.. Heard the PSP GTA is good.

PSP or XBOX 360? Didnt think i would ever hear myself say that!!:D

"The true definition of HD is the three elements of the HD value chain - the display, the content and the hardware to play back that content. And PlayStation and Sony is the only organisation that has all three bits of the value chain together.

As you well know," he continued, "the Xbox 360 doesn't play high definition movies and doesn't have true HD functionality - PlayStation 3 is the only format that has 1080-progressive, which is the true definition of HD, so it's really premature to be talking about the HD era.

The HD era really only starts when we are on the market," concludeert Harrison.

Well, really those reasons for the PS3 aren't that much of a big deal either, but they're not stupid. I think there is plenty more reason to bye the PS3, like it has better graphics and better game-play........ which is all the more reason to wait for the PS3.

Wonder if he got in trouble for declaring that 95% of Sony's HDTVs aren't true high definition?
