Slow PC over the net

Right I have a gateway 450 P2 at home which I use for the internet and a bit of downloading.
I only got the internet there 3 days ago (NTL 3M), when I first ran the PC over the net I had no Virus protector, no firewall no Antispyware and no anti-Trojan it ran quick enough. Now I have the lot and the PC has slowed down. I know it more than likely needs more memory and probably a new fast harddrive but Im not sure what memory it supports or if the newer ata harddrives will work on this system.
Also not sure how to find out what motherboard or video card is in this system for upgrading the drivers.

Software im using, Virus scanner: AVG, Antispyware: Ad-Aware, firewall: Kerio, anti-trojan: Ewido, Web browser: firefox, Email: Thunderbird.

Any suggestions beside get a new PC as I have a 2.4 P3 for games and a little video editing which I want to leave off the net for the moment so nothing gets screwed up on it.

Are you using the USB or Ethernet ?

If possible get an ethernet card in the PC and use that instead of USB. It'll slow the PC down much less (shouldn't slow it down at all).

Cheers DemonOfTheFall for the suggestion but its connected through an Ethernet card.

Any way of ID'ing what motherboard / videocard for driver updates?

Shoudn't be slow. Check what process'es/task are running.

Will check that when I go home, currently in work.

Will a DDR-DIMM 3200 work in this old system?

    Also will a ATA/133 work?
