The page cannot be displayed

I seem to always get this message when trying to go to a new page, it never really happens when clicking through a website, but if I try and go from one website to another it happens. This has only started since I started using wireless and not the USB modem. If I refresh the page once or twice it will go to the page. I also get disconnected from MSN, I never did on USB modem. At the time of these instances, I could be chatting on MSN (when the The page cannot be displayed occurs) or browsing the net when disconnected from MSN so it's not the connection being lost I'm sure.

Any suggestions as to what could be causing this?

Well my guess would be as you've migrated to a USB modem, your processor is taking on more of a workload in regard to your interent connection, maybe your processor is under a bit of a strain maintaining the USB modem and henceforth you lose connection every couple of seconds?... Pff, that's my guess anyway, I can't really see any other reason why you'd have a problem like this with a USB modem...

Hi, thanks for the reply, it's actually the USB modem that was fine, the wireless is the one giving me problems;)

    Sounds like it could be a few things;

    1. Timing out on the router, check your settings, if on broadband use the 'nailed up' setting.

    2. DNS not working correctly. Could be that you need to use the ISP's DNS addresses, if its Eircom it should be Primary 159.134.247.6, Secondary 159.134.248.17. If its not Eircom, check with your ISP for the correct settings. Eircom do have DNS problems from time to time, sometimes just swapping the primary address for the secondary fixes this...

Check at the bottom of the error page for the actual fault, sounds like it says DNS error.

If you are using DHCP to pick up your settings on your router, then go to the command prompt, type in ipconfig/all and se what your settings are. Tracert to your dns server to check. You should also tracert to a web site say tracert www.google.ie to check that your DNS is working correctly.

    3. Poor wireless connection. Check your signal strength, if its low move your router antennas to a better position.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I don't have a clue what any of that means or how to change it:o I'm with UTV Clicksilver. Ok, I can't get it to give the page cannot be displayed message, I'm lazing, siting up on my bed with laptop on my lap, rather than on the desk which is about 1500mm away, would this make a difference?

OK, sorry for the techie detail Cormie. What I was saying was that there are settings on your router/modem that are required to connect to the Internet and find website addresses. DNS converts a regular web url to an IP address eg. www.google.ie has its IP address as 64.233.183.104. If the error message you get back on the web page says DNS error, then your DNS settings may be incorrect. UTV Quiksilver, is this cable or ADSL?

    Thanks again for the reply.

UTV is ADSL I'm quite sure.

I just copied this from the page cannot be displayed page:
    The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

    Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Yes, if wireless signal to noise ratio is poor at the desk. Wireless can get a bit choppy in areas with low signal strength and give the behaviour you describe. The wireless client utility in your system tray should have an option to display signal strength.

Thanks for the replies. Still having the problem. Signal strength is -67-71 dmb, noise -97 dmb if that makes a difference?
