    Ok...Bare with me here...

I ran a Norton scan of my computer last night, it found a couple of things but I have no idea what it did with them....Anyway, this morning I turned on the laptop and it spent an inordinate amount of time on the intitial stat up screen...you know the one that says Windows XP and has the bar running from right to left under it (ala Kit on Knightrider)....

Finally loads into windows but the music that accompanies that sounded like my speakers were in bits....When I play radio online it comes out really slow and crackly (like a tape on low speed double)....

Now, as soon as Windows starts, everying happens very slowly...the icons on screen etc....and when I go to click something, there's a beep and the thing freezes up for a while..

Also, on start up there's a norton alert that goes a little something like this:

    C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~1\DEFALERT.dll

Basically telling me there's something missing.

I ran a system restore...and I thought all was well when the music kicking off windows sounded normal again but the alert came up again and I got the beep and freeze again too.

    Any ideas??

    Uninstall norton.

Google Regseeker and download & install it. Scan & sort the registry.

Then install AVG and see how you get on then.

    1. Boot into Safe Mode
    2. Uninstall & reinstall Norton/AVG/antivirus (skip this if you think Norton is ok)
    3. Run Full/Deep System scan with antivirus
    4. Install SpyBot, AdAware and HijackThis.
    5. Run all the above on full/deep mode.
    6. Delete anything thats found either with the antivirus package or spyware
    7. Using HijackThis prevent suspect IE plugins from starting
    8. Reboot into normal mode

    Hopefully that should cure it.

Hi Wizzard, thanks for the reply.

Ok..I uninstalled Norton for the time being....when I booted up the computer I hit f10 and ran a hard drive scan...it finished and told me that #1-7 failed, whatever that means. I then started it in safe mode and it gave me this message:

<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Windows cannot start because this file is missing or corupt....

    Oh dear.

Whip out your windows install disc, pop it in the drive, run a "repair" on your existing installation. If that doesn't work, your harddrive is buggered.

i thought it was f8 to get into safe mode ? whats f10 do ?

sounds to me like norton has disabled / removed /quarintened ( sp ) a file thats needed for windows

can you get into safe mode ?

dosnt repair option in windows remove every file / folder on your desktop ? its been a while since i used it . but usually i just go for a clean install . i dont trust windows repair utilities

You have to love it when your computer tells you the kernel is missing... :)
If you have another dirve install a new copy of windows on it and slave the one you have now. evac the files you want and start again.

Which is what I probably should have done. Instead I popped in my windows disc and, high on ignorance, watched in horror as a brand new windows loaded up and I lost all my important files. I usually back up everything but as soon as this problem happened the laptop moved way too slowly for me to back up anything...when I tried it just froze. It's gonna have some serious repurcussions for me and I have no idea how it bloody well happened in the first place.
