I'm thinking of treating myself to something like that for xmas, but maybe only one gtx ;)

Does the second one really make much difference?

Check out the benchmarks and decide for yourself (personally, i think a big fat "Not worth it" comes to mind.

EDIT: Unless you're lucky enough to own a monitor that supports a high resolution and you like to game at 1600x1200. But since you own an LCD, you'll probably be doing all the gaming at it's native res, whatever that is.

All sounds very sweet except for the FX-57. There is no reason to ever buy a processor that expensive. Ever...

trojan why didnt ya get an x2 4800(same money), i know the fx-57 is clocked a little higher but theres only one of them(not dual core like the x2), with the x2 you coulda been multitasking like a mentalist, read a lot articles saying that with advent of x2 s the fx s are becoming obsolete

if you use multi threaded apps, or multiple heavy cpu usage programs at the same time. If you use single threaded apps (which most do) an fx is better for now. Granted in the future (not so distant) we will all use multicore, but right now most will benifit more from a faster single core cpu

yeah this was a true a little while ago when dual cores where clocked a good bit slower than than fx's, but now with the athlon 64 dual core x2 4800 2mb cache is only v slighty slower even in single threaded apps than an fx-57 1mb cahe so whats the point

tbh im only buy fx for the ocing potential, i suppose at stock speeds the x2 is better value, but fx is much better for oc'ing.

    LOL, you forgot the:

I'd much prefer to buy a 1.8 Opty for €150 and clock it beyond the standard speed of a €1100 FX-57. Now that is what overclocking is all about imho

If only I could find one...

id rather buy an fx57 and overclock it to way past an optys or fx's speeds and have an unavailable speed :D lol

I'm going for an opti 146 myself. Unfortunately I can't get my hands on one of those 8 phase mobos, so I'm going to get one of the DFI expert boards instead...unlesss anyone can suggest something better.

How much did all that cost :S

That's just crazy money to spend on a PC - performance can be matched (or near) without going SLI (you'll only be gaming at 1280x1024 on a 19" tft anyway) and an Opteron 144/146..

Spose you've ended up with a sweet rig though & if i had money to burn I'd end up with similar..

Are you overclocking? You didnt mention what mobo you bought... What are the timings on the ram?

You can do it alright, but TFT's are best used at their native resolution, otherwise they just scale the image internally. Which isn't always a good thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Nforce

1600 x 1200 is the native res on my monitor........

Still don't get it, my 6800ultra system plays every game i have on full(inc F.E.A.R) n it cost me €800... Considering the FX-57 cost more than that alone n doesn't play the games any faster(well it does but u wont notice it) whats the point???

    Spec.
    AMD 64+ 3500
    2gig ram
    2x250gb HD
    6800ultra

You still havent mentioned what motherboard you chose..

What type of memory did you go for and what timings?

    Are you overclocking?

    What cooler are you using?

How much did it all come to?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,279 ✭✭✭DemonOfTheFall

E-Peen threads make baby jesus cry. Buying a new pc isn't tweaking or modding, it's just buying a new pc then showing off to everyone.

    No

    1700

If thats €1700, sounds cheaper than I thought..

Thing I cant understand is that you bought a ridiculously expensive CPU & 2 gfx cards, but then used crap ram? :S

I agree. The timings ain't the best. Sell the ram and get some monster mushkins with 2-2-2-5 or at least DDR500 2.5CL (for overclocking of course)

Just noticed people debating dual core and benchmarks etc. I'd like to draw attention to this http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/21/the_mother_of_all_cpu_charts_2005/ This little number from the dudes at THG really shows up the limitations of sythetic benchmarks and shows us what really happens in everyday life, and also the pros and cons of dual core! Notice how well the Pentium EE do well in Sythetic benchs and the FX-57's ranking changes somewhat from bench to bench. While in real life tests the FX-57 (And most top end AMD's) really shines compared to Intel! Hopefully this sheds light on the topic,

I'll be happy with 2.8ghz on my nice air cooler once it's 100% prime stable, and that isn't unusual for an opty, even if it's a weaker one. AMD apparently aren't making them anymore, so get yours while you can ;) I've read that lots of people can do 3ghz on air / water, 3.4ghz on phase change
