    Hi,

this savage machine arrived yesterday, The screen is amazing as is everything else about it. I ordered a 60GB hardrive but it is only 52GB and with all the pre-installed crap on it it is already down to 46GB. Do you think i could compain to Dell saying that the HD isnt the size i ordered ?

    Thanks

The HD should be 60 GIG (or at least quite near it)
The Master file table also takes up a substantial amount of space. This holds data on every file on the HD.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 60 Gig HD, not sure how much space was left when I received it but no doubt it was similar to yours.

With Windows and all the sh*t Dell like to put on their computers, alot of space is already taken up.

You could format the HD and install your own copy of Windows which would at least clear the Dell rubbish off. I'm not sure this would save you a great deal of space though.

does the dell have a hard drive recovery systems as opposed to recovery cds, the recovery system on the hard drive could be taking up some of the space on the 60gb HD,

"60 gigs" in market-speak is closer to "56 gigs" in use.
    So..56
    - Recycle Bin (Reserved space - approx 10% of the drive)
    - System Restore points (Reserved space)
    - Recovery partition (Unconfirmed, but 2 websites claim this takes up approx. 10GB)
    - The OS, SP, patches, and drivers.
    - Dell software
    - Your software
    - Your data

    = approx 46...

Ring and complain if you want. You should. It will not get you far though. At best, they'll send you a copy of the reovery discs (Which you can burn yourself, and remove the recovery partition).

thanks for the replys. They seem to make sense.

One other thing. The res is 1920 x 1200. All the fonts seem fine but alot of graphics on websites are blurred ? There are some nVidia settings but i dont know what they do. Any ideas ?

    Thanks

Hard to say..could be one or two reasons.

The most probably I'd say is that the image is simply being stretched - @ a high resolution, over a large-ish screen and the images could be be set to "72ppi" approx. (It's actually a relative term really..) -> Put simply: Think of the picture printed on a balloon..and a similar effect produced as when you inflate that balloon further..

Also, so the new screens' coating can cause a blurred effect.

What is blurred exactly? (Text in images, all of the image, etc.)
    Provide some examples.

LCD's cannot resize pixels like CRT's. So, you need to match the res with the exact amount of pixels on the panel for optimal viewing.

    Taken from pcworld.com:
You can see more on the Dell Inspiron 6000's wide screen than on most other 15.4-inch displays thanks to its WUXGA resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels. In fact, you can work with higher-resolution photographs, more spreadsheet columns, and more tiled documents simultaneously on the Inspiron 6000 than you can on some 17-inch wide screens. (The Inspiron 6000 is also available with a 1280-by-800-pixel WXGA screen or a 1680-by-1050-pixel WSXGA+ screen for $150 less or $50 less, respectively.)

Failing that, it just could be the result of a very high res screen and low res images.
