Two of my pics were picked up by the Irish Times last week, and am wondering if anyone has any experience of the rates they tend to pay?

Two pics, one 9x5in and one 4x2.5in in the Sport Supplement.

    Any ideas?

    First of all congrats.

Fees are always tricky and it's something I've had problems figuring out recently. I'd recommend having a look at the NUJ freelance rates at least as a guide. http://media.gn.apc.org/feesguide/photo.html

    Best of luck.

    Yes, congrats are in order..

Having never actually been paid for photos used in newspapers / other media, I may not be the best person to give advice, however I would give you a figure of EUR50 - 75 per image. Or you could ask for EUR100 for both. Up until now, professing my newness to the industry has served me well with journalists / editors - they've helped me out and given me advice. With a national paper like that, however, they may be more brusque (I'm not basing that on anything more than a hunch). Let us know how you get on, it would be interesting to hear.

How did you get your photos in it?

Have been writing/snapping for sailing mag, Afloat, for a long long time. Took some photos of the Irish lads rowing in the Transatlanic rowing race (<a href="www.atlanticchallenge.ie">www.atlanticchallenge.ie</a>) and the rowing correspondent, Liam Gorman, was doing a feature on the race.

They passed on my number and Liam called me for the photos. Nice to see them featured there, particularly as on that particular day I was out driving a boat for a top photojournalist (Crispin Rodwell - nicest press photographer I've ever met), and my photos got the nod over his.

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Had a look at the NUJ guide, and have had some recommendations from two other veteran snappers so we'll see what happens.

    Ta,

    Markham
