Every time I delete my cookies and temp. internet files(often), I lose all the passwords & user names saved for websites, forums, gmail etc.
Is it possible to create a seperate folder for the ones I want to keep?

I just re-installed xp so I don't want any freeware apps, bloatware etc. gobbling memory, any ideas?

Hey glynf. Cookies are relatively harmless. They keep track of your sessions with particular websites so that they can remember your settings and preferences as you move between different pages on the site.

The most malicious things cookies can do is keep track of your website usage so, say you go to google, they save a cookie on your hard disk and then you go to various other websites, google can sometimes know which ones you've been to.

They canont run adware, bloatware, virii, trojans, or any other nasties. They're just little text files that store your unique usreid for particular websites.

If you're into total privacy, they're a nuisance, but most people don't care about them. Dunno about IE, but most good browsers have options to ask you if you want to accept cookies. You can choose to always accept cookies from yahoo, etc. and deny any others you don't like. Look for privacy or security settings somewhere in the options.

If you dont want a non-bloated freeware cookie manager (eg CookieWall) then just periodically delete the ones you dont want to keep from your cookies folder at C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Cookies rather than clear them from the settings within IE. Cookies appear in the TempInternetFiles Folder but that is a virtual/special folder and not the actual place on the HDD where they are stored. Alternatively make a copy of the Cookies folder before you clear TIFs etc and then you can always copy back the ones you want.

Thanks for the advice lads, cookie wall Ill give a shot.
i'm a bit wary of installing unnessesary ****e on my lappy, at the moment only kaspersky suite, quicktime and real, bf2 and f.e.a.r installed, and its running like a dream.
Might format, partition & re-install xp twice, and keep one Os' for gaming only.
