    NNNGGG.

So I want to go to the carrickmines exit if the M50 from Stillorgan Road type area.

Drive down to the Sandyford Ind Estate where there's an M50 junction.. head up to the roundabout.. what's this, you can only go Northbound? Hmm, fair enough, I guess I'll head northbound to the Dundrum exit, come off there, spin around and head south bound.

What's this? There's no bleedin' Dundrum exit heading southbound on the M50! You're stuck all the way until Firhouse/Tallaght!!

    AGGGGGGGHHH.

Is there a clear map anywhere showing the M50 junctions?

I pity any tourists, the signage is woeful!

I presume you mean heading northbound. Well there is. The exit is marked Sandyford, Dundrum, Rathfarnham. It leaves you on the road that leads to Dundrum village. I took it last week.

If you did indeed mean Southbound, well Sandyford is south of dundrum so there is no exit, obviously.:p

Sorry, I did indeed mean Northbound..

As you head Northbound from Sandyford on the M50 there is no Dundrum exit, the next exit is at Firhouse!

The mind boggles at the design of this !

So there is clearly a way of actually getting onto it Southbound, by heading over the flyover, and through the locality up to the bigger junction at Sandyford. The problem then is signage! As you come up the N31 approaching the M50, there are clear as day signs that say "(M50)", but nothing to indicate that you can only go Northbound.

When you reach the flyover, there should be signs pointing you in that direction that say "(M50 Southbound)" or something.

I assume there was a good reason why they didn't simply build a southbound on-ramp from Leopardstown, and that they didn't just do it out of spite to piss people off. Anyone know anybody in the appropriate department of DLRCoCo or wheoever was responsible for the design who might be able to give an answer?

the dundrum\sandyford junction is stretched over a couple of kilometres - its basically 2 partial junctions joined by link roads.

The Leopardstown junction is a partial junction thats connects sort of in the middle of the 2 dundrum junctions, so when you join the motorway northbound from leopardstown you've already gone past the northbound exit for Dundrum

I think they don't want local traffic using the motorway here.

Then use the dual carriageway and turn off at Cabinteely.

The clearest map I have found is the 18th Edition of the Dublin Street Map (ISBN 1-901496-92-9), just published.

Traffic is muck on the N11, I'd rather not queue for the privelege of heading South when there's a perfectly good Motorway running parallel to it.

I've emailed the NRA and DLCoCo.

DLCoCo have replied straight away saying the message was forwarded onto a senior engineer in the traffic section.

    Nothing yet from the NRA.

    Here's the mail:

    Hi,

I got your contact details on the DLRcoco web site.

I have a query/suggestion about the M50 extension that passes through
    Sandyford.

Last night I wanted to go to the Carrickmines exit of the M50 from the
    Leopardstown junction (N31).

As I approached the junction up the N31, there were signs for M50, but
when I got to the junction itself
I found it wasn't possible to head Southbound from this junction, only
    Northbound according to the signage.
So I figured on heading Northbound to the Dundrum exit, and come off
there, turn around, and head back
down southbound. Only problem is, when I got onto the M50 Northbound,
there is no Northbound exit for
    Dundrum at Junction 13!

This meant I was stuck on the M50 all the way to Firhouse, because a
lack of signage at the N31 junction
meant I had absolutely no way of knowing how to get Southbound onto it.

Can I suggest that the the council and/or NRA please sort out some signage on the approach to the N31 junction with the M50, clearly guiding people who head up the N31 through the correct roads in the locality that will bring you onto the M50 heading southbound?

    Thanks and best regards,

Ok i didnt get which exit you were coming on at. The "sandyford" one you are referring to is actually the one at leopardstown roundabout and not the sandyford exit which is incidentally the same exit as dundrum going northbound. However as someone pointed out, if you get on the m50 at lepoardstown you have already passed the exit for sandyford.

Confusing or what  Some decent sinage would definitely help.

This gets even better... I tried for a second time in two days to get onto the M50 southbound at Sandyford, to head to Carrickmines. Which I managed to do.. woohoo!

But I guess the whole "Residents of Carrickmines VS the NRA" thing has had a lasting effect, cos the NRA haven't bothered to put exit signs for Carrickmines anywhere Southbound on the M50! Ended up at the M11 junction before I realised I had gone way too far, had to come off at Shankill and drive back up the N11 anyway!

    AGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH.
