Whats the story with all these silly decorations that people are putting on the roofs of their houses

1 doz santas,1 doz snowmen,20 raindeers and a few dwarfs for good luck to light up the night sky

They look so tacky and cheap and it's not all for the kids!

Why is everyone so anti-christmas? Its only once a year and think of how miserable it would be if there was no Christmas, crap weather most of the time and short dark days.:(

Anyone from Dundalk will probably have noticed the woeful lighting display by one of the residents on the Racecourse road (near the bowling alley). Jesus, but it's bad..!

there is tastefully done but when a house looks like the entrance to a carnival then it is gone a tad too far

I just moved into a new house and my neighbours have decided to put a 12 foot Homer Simpson dressed as santa witha lightbulb head at the front of there house. His arm brings a beer to his mouth every few seconds. The house is also covered in lights and snowmen etc as is the house nextdoor to that. Luckily they are about 15 doors down not right next door. I wonder sometimes if it can be seen from space!

Some can look good, but I'm usualy in tears with laugheter when ever I drive up through Jobstown at Christmas. The place is like a carnival or a circus or something.

Tacky outdoor decorations generally look cheap, but what's worse is when every house on the street decides they're in competiton and starts trying to outdo the neighbours. Suddenly the whole local area is producing artificial sunlight and draining the national grid. Why not just a few fairy lights in the window?

I'm sorry to say it's actually not the worst I've seen. Try driving through some of the estates.

I once saw a house completely covered in standard sized 100 watts just coloured in. The sight of hordes of stone-throwing vandals like moths flocking
towards a giant lamp was almost refreshing. (That'll take 'em down a peg...shiny...people!)

    I think they're rad.

Its not as cut and dry as that I think. Some houses do it well, and others resemble a game-show set.

Less is more in my book. Its a pity my parents dont share the same view though. I think as every one of their children left the nest they impulse bought decorations out of boredom. At this point the house resembles that of the Griswolds - National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.

You can choose your friends, but not your parents eh?

White fairy lights on a tree look quite good, but that's as far as anyone should go otherwise it's overkill and looks crap.

    A simple light in a window's enough.

Anything else is tacky and wasteful.

You wanna see a light show, try touring Finglas West - there's a street there that has a draw on the power grid like no other. They even had the Gerry Ryan show round with them one year. If that isn't a measure of how tacky it is round there, I dunno what is.

Every Christmas there are cars practically kerb-crawling as they go round looking in amazement at all the tack...

One trying to out do the other, it's crazy. Heard some of them have gone to America just to buy the outdoor lights, sad really.

To make matters worse 98FM are hosting a competition on their site with pictures of decorated houses.
The winner as voted by the 98FM listeners will win their 2006 Electricity bill paid .

I find the whole thing highly entertaining!! I think it looks cute, and the lights are only ever up for the longest of a bit over a month....I mean it doesn't kill anyone to have to drive by them or see them so I don't know why people get so annoyed (unless you're the one paying the electricity bill) I like them.

its so tacky. has anyone seen the attempts of the residents of the inner city flat complexes trying to catch on to the craze, its laughable. Christmas is bad enough without further Yank-ification of it

What so because they live in smaller spaces, they cant put up lights? Anyway did anybody ever think the lights are put up for the childrens benefit, I mean, I dont particularly like the lights, I agree with less is more and If you dont like them Nightwish, just dont look at them .

There is a house in Artane that is done up big time and they leave thier side gate open and they have a big display out thier backgarden aswell, they houseowners do this for 2 reasons, for the children, and the other is they have a donation box for various charities aswell, and they raise thousands upon thousands every year.

Lights on houses are nice if done tastefully and in moderation!!! There seems to be an awful anti-christmas on the After Hours forum, do ye not enjoy christmas or something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭rugbug86

i love christmas but i think that the outdoor santa's haning out the window/climbing up the house are just tack central. when i was younger i was all loving bright, colourdy christmas decorations, but now i prefer more tasteful decorations, nice silver decorations, white lights.

If lights look tacky on houses they're hardly going to look classy hanging off a balcony of a flat, whether it be on an inner city flat complex or a gated apartment block. It just so happens that the residents of the aforementioned flat complexes have terrible lights hanging off them, and its not as if one can ignore them, they resemble floodlights and probably use up twice as much electricity.
