It hasn't became overrated, but it is extremely materialistic(probably always has been) and is very commercial. Still really enjoy it though.

I think it depends on how you celebrate it. The day ought to primarily be about celebrating Jesus' birth and I think most people make the effort to go to mass on Christmas even if they don't usually go on Sundays.

Your thread title clearly states it is.
"Xmas" is just putting a big X across Christ in the word Christmas (the "true" meaning of Christmas)....
When you're a kid, it's the best time of the year... but when you grow up, you get to see just how commercially raped it is (but it still can be enjoyable).

I suppose it depends what particular things you focus on and what you can manage to ignore

for example if you can focus on

1)the fact that it's the only time you see your family all together (if you do) and it's the only time that certain good friends are back in Ireland
    2) there are plenty of good piss-ups, most nights of the week (like we needed an excuse...)

and ignore the fact that Dunnes is playing Christmas songs in early November  .......... why why why?

and also if you don't give a crap about what presents you do end up getting
..then yes it's a good thing here

christmas is supposed to be a celebration of the birth of christ and of the christian faith but what may i ask is christian about spending a fortune on material goods while billions (1,000,000,000's) are hungry dying and living in extreme deprevation.ya can stick your celtic tiger up the chimney to stop the fat mercenary mythical man from filling your home full of commercialism.
i would like to see a special tax on all non essential items(maybe on xmas trees, everybody buys xmas trees) for the xmas period and the proceeds sent to africa and other destitute countries.
its a time when kids learn that greed and excess is grand and see their elders half cut most of the 2 weeks around the 25th.
it has been stated by boots that we on average give and receive 10 presents each so 50 million presents will be given in ireland ,what do all these presents mean? whats their connection to the baby in the barn?im not religous in anyway i tend to think of xmas as just another excuse for excess(much like the celtic tiger) where the country virtually shuts for 2 weeks and many families without any sense of irony come together and barely speak the rest of year when they're too busy in the rat race of modern life.
as tolstoy wrote, how much land does a man need?

    Personally I love Christmas time!

Our family is too big to buy eachother presents so every year we do a secret santa! Myself and my closest brother still excange gifts! It's really great fun and instead of getting loads of things you don't want you get one gift that someone has put some real thought into!
We also give €100 each and every year we pick a different charity.

Christmas for us isn't about religion, none of us go to mass or anything! Its just the one time of year that we can all spend time together! I love that because none of my brother's and sister's live at home, some are in different countries. Hehe, the night before christmas we all sleep in the same room like we used to as kids! Except now we drink ourselves to sleep! hehehe
Anyway, I love christmas and I'm really looking forward to this year! I feel sorry for peope who can't enjoy this time of year!

Christmas bores me to be honest. I have no real extended family or anything like that to look forward to. Once Santa died, so did Christmas for me.

Christmas, for the past 100 odd years, has been about commercialism

You queue jumping prick, I only bothered entering this thread to point out the irony of the title :D Beaten to it, damn.

Christmas for me is about turkey and 10 straight days of getting stocious drunk whilst belting out the Pogues and Slade at crimbo parties.

Unfortunately I had to vote 'defo yes', BUT, I love Christmas.
I love the whole build up to it.
I love the children getting all excited, writing their letter to santa, 20 times because each time they're trying to improve on their hand writing, watching out the window for santa's robins to be spying on them to see if they're behaving, etc, etc, etc

The day itself is a bit of a let down though!
The children end up getting SO many presents that they can't remember half of them, & some of them barely even make it out of the box.
Some of the littler ones end up playing more with the box than the really expensive present that came inside the box!!!

    Who's to blame?
We are!!! (& advertising of course!!)
These days, children want the best of everything, & their parents can't let the 'Jone's' down the street get one up on them, so santa brings their children even more presents, even better presents, etc, etc, etc

    Example:
My neighbour was in yesterday & she said Chirstmas is mad so she's not going to spend much this year because they have too much.
Then continued to mention that:- 1 was getting a laptop & lots of other crap,
1 was getting an iPod, a Playstation, some games, lots of rally gear, blaa, blaa, & she has 3 other kids, all which will get about the same value of gifts!

& that's her NOT going mad this year!!!!

i LOVE Christmas. I know it has lost its religious significance for a lot of people, but ultimately, it brings families together and creates an amazing cheerful atmosphere.
On a less poetic note, there are lots of presents to be had :D

The magic of christmas can't be found in the Xbox 360, nor in the Ipod ir any of the other 'must have presents. The magic Christmas can be found on a wet day in December when the bus driver lets everybody off their fare, just because it's christmas. Christmas is only ruined by commercialism if you let commercialism ruin you.

Yes definitely. Christmas is not what it used to be, some children not all are spoiled beyond belief.

Commercially it's gone way OTT. Christmas begins mid November these days with decorations everywhere.

I think it's after getting really bad in a way that if you go into any city in Ireland these days it's packed to the brim with people shopping. Im ranting i know but it's terrible to see so much money being spent on material things & people in 3rd world countries starving for christmas. I also know i shouldn't compare these two but i am right in what i say christmas is every day of the year now

ya.. christmas is great becauase its comercial!
Santa was designed by Coke!!! (and he's the greatest!)
Hell, Rudolf wasnt a reigndeer until they started selling a christmas song about him.. now he is the main reigndeer!

The religious stuff is all crap! Its the comercialism that drives christmas, walking past shops with songs and displays put people in good moods, seeing all the bright lights people buy and put up.. it just brings a smile and happyness to each and everyone out there.. its the most wonderful time of the year!
