Is it worth buying the additional cover for a desktop - its about 130 for 3yrs covering all parts and labour if anything goes wrong?

For some things it is as trying to buy parts from dell for out of warranty pcs can be expensive, also if you are not comfortable with opening up and fixing the pc in case of problems

Yes. If anything goes wrong at all changes are it will cost more than €130, and this way you will not have the hassle of having to fix it yourself. If you haggle you my get it for a bit less, offer €100.

Get the cover ..... I had one free fix on a Dimension T600 during its 3 year cover period (disc went to heaven:mad:)

Another problem at year 5 and Dell wanted Euro's 300.00 plus parts to fix it  ..... I ended up buying a new Dimension 3000 at Euro's 629.00 instead

How long will they cover it without the 3 year cover?
because i bought a pc from them and about 4 years later the mouse went. so i rang up and they sent me out another one even though it was outside the 3 years.

I guess it depends on how long the original cover lasted ...... on some machines it's 90 days and on others 12 months ...... and of course, it may depend on just how big a repair job is required

It's nice to know they sent you a new mouse after 4 years :p but don't depend on that attitude if a major failure occurs out of warranty .....

Not necessarily true, it's a gamble. If you are clueless and don't mind spending money for peace of mind then fine. Also a more expensive a system the better value the cover as it's spread over more stuff. Do you know anyone who could fix a PC - if not then it looks more attractive.

For some of the specials ( €150 servers etc. ) it wouldn't be worth it. For some of the entry level servers the difference between 3 year next day on site and 4 hour on site is more than the server cost.

For a low end home built system without a monitor, few of the components would cost more than €100 except the CPU / Processor and after a year you could pick up a replacement for €100, and if self build then you know how it was done already.

BTW a lot of HDD's have three year cover when bought retail or from a reseller but not where Dell or HP ^& co. takes the warranty, they only offer a year unless you buy more.

    No!
But then its not worth buying a Dell in the first place.

    Google 'bathtub curve'.
Odds are that if something is going to fail it will happen in the first year or after at least 3 years.
Besides, any component that costs €100 now will be €50-€60 in a year and €20-€30 in two years.

Big problem with Dells is that many standard components dont fit in a Dell box.

A gal down the road from me had her Hard Disc replaced by her local friendly PC repair shop and they charged her 300 euro's :( and she payed it .... that hurts !!!!

ublinia2 ...... your 3 years of peace and contentment (knowing all hardware repairs will be at Dells expense) will cost you 12 cents a day for the warranty cover

Some gals don't get out of bed for that sort of money ! :p

My rule is minimum warranty for desktops, and 3 years for laptops.

Most parts in desktops (Dell or otherwise) are cheap and generic. Even if the motherboard goes it isnt a huge bill to buy a new case, PSU and mobo, and sometimes you will get away with only the motherboard itself.
