Plug and play problems

I was wondering if anybody has an answer to this:

    I bought a new pc. Its a Dell 9100.

All plug and play items, eg my new usb memory key, do not install properly. The hardware wizzard opened and eventually I got it to be detected in my computer, but every time i plug in the new usb key it says its new hardware.

I think that possibly not all the files from service pack 2 are installed properly. On the usb key installation guide it says that windows will automatically install the required files.

I looked at uninstalling and reinstalling service pack to but servicepack 2 isnt even in add/remove.

Any help would be great, this problem is very frustraiting.

Chances are SP2 is bundled with the OS..so you cannae.

List other PnP devices that you've tried -> i.e. Are they all USB?

Are there any conflicts noted in the Device Manager?
Did you install a driver (Use a CD?) for the memory key, etc. before plugging it
    in?
Do all of the devices stipulate that they work with SP2 - are there updated drivers..?

It's normal enough for Windows to say that it's new hardware each time, but then should identify it,assign the appropriate driver and shut up about it..List exactly what happens when you plug it in.

Yes all of the devices are usb devices. I have been having trouble installing my ipod.

The guide that came with the usb key says that there is no installation required with win xp, just plug it in. They did provide a cd, but the guide says that this is only for win98.

I put in the cd that came with the dell, it contains win xp plus service pack 2. I explored this disk but couldnt find the option to reinstall service pack 2.

The hardware wizard found the file it wanted, but it is not the correct driver for this device. In the device manager it says that this device is working properly, but that it is not installed properly (its yellow).

So basically where I am now is that it is kinda working as i can put files onto the key, every time I plug it in windows detects new hardware, and windows insnt sure what hardware it is.

I think If I were to uninstall or reinstall service pack 2 this problem would be fixed, but I am unsure how to do this.

I magaged to install my digital camera using the cd provided.

My brothers pc didnt need any hardware wizard to operate my new key. he just pluged it in and it worked straight away. His pc is three years old.

Does any of this info help?

Well, re-installing SP2 may not be necessary.
Windows should use the generic driver for Mass Storage Devices - i just wanted to make sure that you didn't have some obscure product:)

Firstly: have you tried using a different USB port?

Yellow, with an exclamation mark - should be what you're seeing.
Right-click on the offender , and Uninstall.
    Then, scan for hardware changes.

    If this fails:
    Remove all USB devices.
In Device Manager, uninstall USB entries and reboot.
Try setting up the key on it's own again..

Additional info: how many USB devices do you normally have plugged in? Do you use a USB hub? Do you have USB2.0 (I would assume so,as it's a newish unit..)

    Hey,
I have tried using a different usb port. THe usb key that I bought is a Transcend Jetflash 110 1gb.

I have built in hub into my monitor, but my pc alone has 7 usb inputs. I use one usb for my wireless keyboard and another for my mouse.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Same thing. In the device manager the usb key is a 'unknown device', it should say jetflash usb key.

I installed it with the standard windows mass storage device drivers.

i have included some pictures to show you what i see.
