As a current undergraduate student, what is the best way to go about getting a reference for a job application? Ought I to go to my tutor? Has anyone any experience of this? I'm applying for a job for next summer, but the closing date is next week!

Doesn't really matter too much. Some departments assign final years with 'referees' to spread the load. If you get on well with your tutor, ask her or him, but if you have a particular member of academic staff who you like or know well, that's cool too. If you ever did project work / helped with a conference / summer job / whatever for any staff, that's a good idea, cause the personal touch of 'If it wasn't for Europerson's help and carrying of coffee urns, I would never have survived' is useful to you. Do check with anyone (including tutor), though, if you are giving their contact details on application forms, as employers are apparently more likely to make a call (if it's a serious enough job) than rely on a written reference.

I'm sure Dr. Barrett would be happy to help a (fake) fellow P.D., Europerson ;).

If you were involved in SU/or are involved, that might be an avenue to take!?
Or of you know your course co-ordinator really well.
